Sudlows, has completed a high dependency electrical job for England’s first immersed tube passageway, Medway Tunnel. First built in 1996, the Medway Tunnel links the town of Strood with Chatham in Kent and provides vital connecting access to over 40,000 vehicles a day.
Medway Council, who have ownership of the tunnel, required an urgent upgrade of their electrical services as the tunnel’s existing UPS system had almost reached full load capacity. Sudlows were sub-contracted to undertake the diverse electrical works, which involved the installation of additional power services and 3x200 KVA UPS units, vital for 24/7 operation of the air circulation and emergency lighting & communications 300m underground.

A time sensitive project, Sudlows were literally against the clock with a maximum of four hours to switch to the new power system before the tunnel had to be reopened to the public. Working with a seamless professional approach, Sudlows’ team of engineers implemented their carefully constructed step-by-step schedule which had allowed for minimum road closures and disruption.

For critical power to the tunnel, Sudlows initially installed two of Riello’s 200kVA floor-standing High Impact Performance (HIP) units for a combination of consistent reliability as well as top functionality and efficiency.

A range of electrical features and systems such as emergency walkways were also installed to efficiently operate the tunnel and provide the safest driving conditions for motorists and cyclists. The newly installed electrical system provided electrical backup to the pumps that keep the tunnel dry – a critical safety element of the project.

John Osborne, Electrical Projects Manager at Sudlows, said:

“I always look to new projects with enthusiasm and find that our team can positively react to different situations having developed a great depth of electrical experience over the years. It is this significant electrical expertise that makes us readily able to react positively to the request of scenarios such as the short four hour change over deadline. A well executed project by the Sudlows team.”
Peter Good, Infrastructure Project Manager for the Medway Tunnel, said:
“It would be fair to say that there were some unforeseen challenges but throughout, Sudlows remained focused and tackled the problems encountered with complete professionalism. Sudlows staff that attended site were very personable and working on the project with them was indeed a pleasure. The end result ensures reliability for the Medway Tunnel operation. I would be more than happy to work with Sudlows on future electrical projects.”
