Scorpion's wins business from Alstom with integrated powe solution
Needing to change its 50-year old standby generator for a state-of-the-art design, Alstom Power has chosen a solution from Scorpion Power Systems. Won on a competitive tender, Scorpion Power Systems has provided Alstom Power with a complete turnkey solution including all electrical installation work and commissioning.
Alstom Power’s Transverse Technologies Material Creep Laboratory, located in Rugby, investigates materials properties at high temperature as part of its development programme. Test rigs containing samples use electrically heated furnaces to maintain a constant temperature from weeks to months at a time.

Protecting the furnaces against power outages is essential as any powercut lasting longer than 4 minutes would be detrimental to the results of the tests.
Similarly, the power protection system also needs to ensure that the laboratory’s air conditioning system is maintained, to ensure a stable temperature environment.

In addition, Scorpion Power Systems Powerhouse DV275 three-phase diesel generator also supports power to the building’s key facilities, such as telephone, lighting and IT equipment. Now, when an outage occurs, it is recognised by the generator’s AMF, which steps in to provide an alternative power supply.

“With our laboratory being temperature critical, ensuring our power supply is of paramount importance,” said Ian Porter, Site Electrical Engineer. “Scorpion won the tender as it was able to provide us with a total solutions package, value for money and fast delivery”.

Specially manufactured with a weatherproof acoustic canopy, the Powerhouse diesel DV generator supplied by Scorpion Power Systems has been specifically manufactured to protect critical and sensitive equipment against major electrical catastrophe. When the mains supply fails, or goes out of acceptable limits, the AMF panel disconnects the faulty mains supply, starts the Generator and connects it to the load. On mains return, the AMF will transfer the load back to the mains and after a cool down time shut down the Generator.

Established in Andover in 1982 and an integral part of the Shenton Group, Scorpion Power Systems has grown to become a leading integrated power solution company, specialising in the production of energy efficiency products. Scorpion's customers include major industrial conglomerates, commercial establishments and government organisations. The company’s extensive range of power products is specifically manufactured to help companies’ safeguard mains supply, lower fuel costs and reduce their carbon footprint.
