Scorpion helps secure power to the health protection agency
Scorpion Power Systems has used its expertise and experience to provide the Health Protection Agency’s Radiation Protection Division with a state-of-the-art standby power system to ensure the safety of its Oxfordshire facility. Won on a competitive tender, Scorpion Power Systems has provided the Health Protection Agency with a complete turnkey solution including all electrical installation work and commissioning.
Prior to the installation of the new standby power system, the building relied on a smaller standby generator also supplied and serviced by Scorpion Power Systems. Needing to ensure that every part of the facility could continue to operate normally when a powercut occurred to ensure its viability in protecting the community, the Health Protection Agency’s Radiation Protection Division decided to upgrade its power support system and invited Scorpion Power Systems and other suppliers to tender for the work.

The Health Protection Agency’s role is to provide an integrated approach to protecting UK public health through the provision of support and advice to the NHS, local authorities, emergency services, other Arms Length Bodies, the Department of Health and the Devolved Administrations.
“We had previously worked with Scorpion and were already aware of their products and technical expertise”, said Adrian Brown. “However in line with European Union guidelines and HPA Procurement Policy we went out to competitive tender armed with a stringent specification. Scorpion won the tender as it was able to provide us with a total solutions package, value for money and fast delivery”.

Specially manufactured with a weatherproof acoustic canopy, the Powerhouse diesel DS550 generator supplied by Scorpion Power Systems has been specifically manufactured to protect critical and sensitive equipment against major electrical catastrophe. When the mains supply fails, or goes out of acceptable limits, the AMF panel disconnects the faulty mains supply, starts the Generator and connects it to the load. On mains return, the AMF will transfer the load back to the mains and after a cool down time shut down the Generator.

“As the Health Protection Agency’s Radiation Protection Division is located in a fairly rural area it can be vulnerable to inclement weather”, concluded Adrian Brown. “With so many demands made upon the Division, it is important that the facility can maintain operations when a powercut occurs”.

Established in Andover in 1982 and an integral part of the Shenton Group, Scorpion Power Systems has grown to become a leading integrated power solution company, specialising in the production of energy efficiency products. Scorpion's customers include major industrial conglomerates, commercial establishments and government organisations. The company’s extensive range of power products is specifically manufactured to help companies’ safeguard mains supply, lower fuel costs and reduce their carbon footprint.
