Patented bi-polar Ni MH battery applications launched for electrical power systems integrators

Nilar has introduced its extensive range of rechargeable nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery modules into the UK, through its distributor Energy Technologies Limited (ETLUK).

Engineered and designed to offer high levels of safety, performance and reliability advantages in fully integrated power systems, Nilar batteries and energy storage modules were specifically developed for advanced electrical engineering applications.

A typical Nilar battery configuration offers a 480 V, 374 Ah, 180 kWh battery pack, with a fast charge in 10 minutes; and a one-hour operation time. DC voltages from 12volt to 1000 volt systems are readily achieved.

Nilar’s International Distributor Manager, Jan Lundquist, said, “The battery packs and modules are suitable for installations requiring totally reliable power backup, failsafe starting , or bulk energy storage, where the emphasis is placed on long-life, reliability and minimal maintenance to ensure an optimised total cost of ownership (TCO)”.

The unique Nilar electrochemistry enables the batteries to withstand deep discharge and they are designed to recharge very quickly and economically.

Mike Gulliford, ETLUK’s Managing Director, said, “Nilar maintenance-free batteries can operate at the heart of power backup systems in many industrial applications.

“If mains power is lost, these battery systems ensure continuity of mission-critical loads, facilitating safe shutdowns, transfer to standby power and safeguarding computer systems. Typical power backup applications for Nilar batteries are UPS, process control systems, emergency lighting, substation switchgear, fire alarms and security systems”.

Nilar batteries are the ideal choice for these applications as they have been purpose-designed to provide low maintenance and long service life from the unique technology within their slim, light-weight power modules.

“The Nilar design is extremely reliable and does not suffer from the ‘sudden death’ which can affect some batteries, even in extreme temperatures ranging from - 30° to + 70°C”, he added.

“The modules offer the flexibility and adaptability to create highly efficient, cost-effective energy storage systems. The use of safe and reliable chemistry and non-toxic metals with 99% recyclability show the precision and forward-thinking in the design and manufacture of these batteries”.

Nilar goes beyond providing batteries by delivering full energy management systems and solutions. The Swedish company are experts in manufacturing and integrating these systems to include electronics and monitoring for superior safety and performance.

“Our reliable, high-tech battery technologies meet all technical, safety and performance requirements”, added Mr Gulliford, "Safety is incorporated into every part of the designs, from each cell to the module to the final system. A key feature is the availability of a communications interface on each module to enable detailed monitoring and charge control strategies”.

Suitable for new-build power systems and as replacements, Nilar batteries optimise low weight and volume, (typically saving some 34% compared with conventional counterparts), low maintenance, and low lifecycle costs for key applications, such as auxiliary backup, engine-starting, regenerative traction and trackside signalling. They are ideal components for use by electrical power systems integrators in a wide variety of applications.
