Today (17th May 2021), the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) celebrates its 150th anniversary and the rich history it holds dating back to 1871. To date, the IET has built a global community of 158,000 members, across 153 countries, spanning all disciplines of engineering and technology.

Call to celebrate inspirational women engineers
The awards celebrate women working in modern engineering and aim to help change the perception that engineering is predominantly a career for men by banishing outdated engineering stereotypes of hard hats and dirty overalls. As well as highlighting female engineering talent, the IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year Awards seek to find role models who can help address the UK science and engineering skills crisis by promoting engineering careers to more girls and women. Just 12% of those working in engineering occupations are women (source: Engineering UK).

93% of industry without skills to meet 2050 climate targets
Only 7% of engineering companies in the UK with a sustainability strategy say they have the skills needed to fulfil it, a survey by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) has revealed. The survey, which looks at the skills engineering employers need to meet 2050 net-zero targets, uncovers that only half (53%) of UK engineering firms think net zero by 2050 is achievable for them.

To celebrate Ada Lovelace Day, six young female engineers have been announced as finalists for the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Young Woman Engineer of the Year Awards 2020. These engineering industry awards celebrate women working in modern engineering - and aim to help change the perception that engineering is predominantly a career for men by banishing outdated engineering stereotypes of hard hats and dirty overalls.

IET increases match funding scheme for scholarships
The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) has increased its match funding scheme to £2m in order to support and inspire more future engineers. The original target of £1m, set as part of its 150th anniversary, has been met and the IET has agreed to continue matching donations for its Diamond Jubilee Scholarships, Engineering Horizons Bursaries and Education 4-19 programmes up to the value of £2m.

IET announces 16 Honorary Fellows to mark 150th year
Sixteen engineers and technologists have been awarded for their outstanding contribution to the engineering and technology industry, with an Honorary Fellowship from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). Pioneering woman engineers and technologists: Kimberly Bryant (Founder of Black Girls CODE), Dr Anne-Marie Imafidon (Co-founder and CEO of Stemettes) and June Angelides (Founder of Mums in Technology), lead the line-up alongside Dr Eben Upton (Chief Executive of Raspberry Pi).

Inspiring exhibition based on local engineering achievements
IET Birmingham: Austin Court, part of IET Venues, has installed a series of permanent engineering exhibits across the city-centre venue, celebrating ground-breaking objects and innovations from the West Midlands. The conference and events venue has been redeveloped to showcase the contributions that engineers from Birmingham and the surrounding areas have made including the x-ray scanner, pneumatic tyre, electric kettle, auto-changing record player, mass produced steel nib pens, celluloid and even the first weather map.

Researchers shortlisted for £350,000 engineering research prize
Five researchers have been announced as shortlisted nominees for the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s (IET) £350,000 A F Harvey Prize Engineering Research Prize. The prize is awarded annually in recognition of an outstanding achievement in engineering research in the fields of medical, microwave and radar or laser/optoelectronic engineering, with the prize fund awarded to support further research led by the recipient. The theme for this year is lasers and optoelectronics.

The IET celebrates Pride in STEM
Savoy Place, London’s leading tech venue, is celebrating equality, diversity and inclusion for Pride Month by flying the rainbow flag throughout June and again on the 5 July for LGBT STEM Day. The venue, which is also the UK flagship home for the IET (Institution of Engineering and Technology), is showing visibility to raise awareness and increase support for LGBTQ+ people in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths). There are also flags flying at IET’s Stevenage site as well as at IET Birmingham: Austin Court.

IET Venues builds festive spirit with LEGO initiative
Throughout December IET Venues will be exclusively gifting boxes of LEGO for every site visit booked and attended during the month, to the Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice and Birmingham Children’s Hospital. IET London: Savoy Place and IET Birmingham: Austin Court will contribute the toys as part of their annual charity initiative, and for each site visit confirmed at either venue in London or Birmingham, a donation will be made in the new year.

Are parents putting children off STEM subjects?
New research has revealed that parents lack confidence in subjects such as Science and Maths, and this is discouraging the younger generation from pursuing those subjects at school and beyond. The study, commissioned by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), found that 43% of parents have heard their children say ‘I’m rubbish at Maths’ and 32% of parents themselves have used similar statements that they acknowledge affect their kids’ confidence in STEM subjects.

  A team of young engineers from Wallace Hall Academy in Dumfriesshire, Scotland have been crowned champions of the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s (IET) FIRST LEGO League UK and Ireland competition.
