Dr Bob John, the former Chief Executive of TWI, was awarded an OBE for services to industry in the 2011 Queen’s Birthday Honours list. Dr John is a graduate metallurgist of the University of Wales (Swansea) where he first became involved with welding through a PhD on the weldability of 5% nickel steel.

The 16th Beijing Essen Welding & Cutting Fair was held earlier this year at New International Expo Center in Shanghai. Ranking in the top two welding and cutting shows in the world, Beijing Essen Welding & Cutting Fair is a yearly event, alternately held in Beijing and Shanghai.This year there were 918 exhibitors from 29 countries and the exhibition attracted nearly 30,000 visitors from more than 70 countries.

The UK’s best shipyard welding apprentices were put through their paces at the yard currently building Britain's biggest ever ships. Babcock in Rosyth won the team crown at the ESAB ShipWeld 2011 final on home soil, overlooked by the yard where the new Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers will be assembled. It is the second time Babcock took the “Best Yard” ShipWeld title, having won in 2009 at BAE Barrow.

ESAB Cutting Systems has introduced the Combirex DX Shape Cutting Machine for plasma and oxy-fuel cutting. ESAB has launched the Hybrio™ family of hybrid laser arc welding equipment. This combines the benefits of laser welding and gas metal arc welding (GMAW) to create an automated welding process that is up to ten times faster than conventional alternatives, with 80-90 per cent less heat input and substantially less distortion.
