Federal-Mogul presents new HSL-drive seal at BAUMA

The new HSL seal is an evolution and special form of the square bore seal that has already been proven to work in the market for many years. In addition to the retaining lip and a spin protection it is equipped with a very efficient protective dirt excluder lip. This design helps to improve protection significantly, leading to reduced leakages and extended service life of the entire system, thus increasing its efficiency.

In certain conditions, the preload of the seal rings on conventional seals can be negatively impacted by heavy mud packing. Compressing the mud results in high pressures which in turn can press particles into the gap between the seal rings. This has an abrasive effect and can lead to the failure of the seal. The new HSL seals are specifically designed to prevent this in such extreme conditions.

“When a machine is restarted dried-on mud can provide additional mechanical challenges and creates higher friction torque in the sealing system,” said Andreas Dengler, Head of Application Technology Mechanical Face Seals at Federal-Mogul. “Our improved mechanical spin protection between the elastomer part and the seal ring counteracts this issue. The technology was successfully tested in our mud box and confirmed in the field by customers with excellent results.

When equipment fails it interrupts the operational workflow, causing costly repairs and downtime. Federal-Mogul’s new HSL seal has potential for further applications in mining, agriculture, construction equipment, and other large-scale machines (e.g. shredders, dredgers, tunnelling machines or stone crushers). The special design is available in all size ranges from 50 to 1,500 millimetres and can be combined with various hard cast materials from the company.
