Thermal Simulation Tool Reduces IC Cost by Comparing Flip-Chip/Wire Bond Thermal Performance

Thermal Simulation Tool Reduces IC Cost by Comparing Flip-Chip/Wire Bond Thermal Performance
Flomerics announced today that the Package Engineering Group from Applied Micro Circuits Corporation is using Flotherm thermal simulation software to significantly reduce the cost of packaging and the project resource cost for a new family of ICs. AMCC achieved these outstanding results by comparing flip-chip and wire bond thermal performance early in the design process.

Simulation Helps Solve Difficult Thermal Challenge in Tower Mounted Amplifier

Simulation Helps Solve Difficult Thermal Challenge in Tower Mounted Amplifier
Thermacore used Flomerics’ Flotherm thermal simulation software to solve a challenging thermal management problem in a tower mounted amplifier (TMA) for a cellular base station. Thermal simulation showed that the heat from the 1 by 1.5 inch amplifier chips did not spread out sufficiently to utilize the full extent of the heat sink, causing the chips to overheat. The problem was addressed by adding a vapor chamber to each chip to reduce the spreading resistance and utilize the full extent of the heatsink. The simulation showed this approach reduced the temperature at the base of the heat sink to acceptable levels.

CCE Upgrades EnSuite to Support CATIA V5 R18 Files

CCE Upgrades EnSuite to Support CATIA V5 R18 Files
CCE has announced that EnSuite Version 2 – its multi-CAD viewing, translation and productivity software – has been upgraded to provide support for CATIA V5 R18 files. The latest version of EnSuite can open R18 files and translate them to any of the other formats currently supported by EnSuite including CATIA V4, Pro/ENGINEER, Unigraphics, SolidWorks, Parasolid, IGES and STEP. The latest version of EnSuite can also write R10 through R14 files, which can be read by R18. “We are committed to providing support for the latest versions of all the leading CAD systems,” says Vinay Wagle, V.P. Sales & Marketing of CCE.

Thales Air Systems Division Selects EFD.Pro Engineering Fluid Dynamics Software Embedded in Pro/ENGINEER

Thales Air Systems Division Selects EFD.Pro Engineering Fluid Dynamics Software Embedded in Pro/ENGINEER
Thales missile electronics facility in Basingstoke has chosen Flomerics’ EFD.Pro, the Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire-embedded engineering fluid dynamics software. EFD.Pro will be used to analyze complex defense electronics cooling problems at the front end of the design process. “As an engineer, I am concerned about solving problems in the shortest possible timeframe. Flomerics technology helps us in achieving this,” said Mark Pashley, principal mechanical engineer. “We created a short list after an initial investigation of available tools. Upon completing a series of benchmarking exercises, EFD.Pro’s ease of use, speed and accuracy led to its selection over and above the candidates benchmarked. In addition to the technology, I think it is also important to mention the support services, which in the eight years I have been using Flomerics software has always been excellent -- both in terms of speed and quality of response.”

EnSuite Version 2 Adds Visual Compare, Part Isolation, Parameter Search Features

CCE has announced the release of a new update of EnSuite Version 2 - its multi-CAD viewing, translation and productivity software. This release provides a wide range of new features including the ability to view two models superimposed on top of each with the differences highlighted. It also provides the ability to isolate a part from a complex assembly by making the rest of the assembly transparent. Another new capability enables users to search for features based on parameter values.

Simulation Helps Meet Thermal Challenges of World’s Fastest Supercomputer

CH2M HILL engineers used Flomerics’ Flovent computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software to simulate predicted thermal loads that will be generated by the IBM Roadrunner machine. Roadrunner is projected to be in the top 10 on the HPC Top 500 list and will be installed at Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Nicholas Metropolis Center. By regularly modeling the facility, CH2M engineers have helped the DOE stay one step ahead of the continuously increasing thermal load while minimizing initial and operating costs of cooling equipment. “The CFD simulations have saved money by determining exactly how much cooling capacity is required to handle current and projected thermal loads and identifying design improvements that boost cooling efficiency,” said Andy Solberg, CH2M HILL engineer.

F1 Limitation on Use of CFD Software Could Benefit More Productive Software Providers

F1 Limitation on Use of CFD Software Could Benefit More Productive Software Providers
Flomerics has reacted to the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile’s (FIA’s) recent announcement of restrictions on the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis software by suggesting that these restrictions might actually increase the use of more efficient CFD tools that automate most of the modeling process. “We believe that the FIA’s limitation on CFD and wind tunnel testing will accelerate the trend towards use of CFD tools that accomplish more in less time by integrating simulation with the design process,” said John Parry, Research Manager for Flomerics.
