Flow Simulation Improves Photovoltaic Solar Panel Performance

Flow Simulation Improves Photovoltaic Solar Panel Performance
Schueco, one of the leading producers of photovoltaic panels, used Flomerics’ Flovent computational fluid dynamics software to redesign its products to improve their thermal performance so that 15% to 20% more panels can be used in a given space. Today’s photovoltaic panels present a major thermal design challenge since every degree Centigrade of temperature rise reduces the power produced by 0.5%. “The CFD results helped us understand exactly how the panels were being heated and guided us as we made major improvements to the design,” said Hamid Batoul, Technical Director of Solar Department, Schueco International, Paris, France. “As the first in our industry to perform CFD simulation, we believe that we are now able to provide our customers with substantially higher power output than an equivalent competitive design.”

EnSuite updated with useful tools for Collaboration and Design Validation

EnSuite updated with useful tools for Collaboration and Design Validation
CCE has announced a new upgrade to EnSuite Version 2 – its multi-CAD viewing, translation and productivity software. The latest version offers mark-ups and redlining, interference/clearance checking and provides parent and child information for each component in an assembly. “This new upgrade to EnSuite substantially improves the ability of non-CAD users to analyze a design and quickly obtain the information they need to better perform their jobs,” says Vinay Wagle, V.P. Sales & Marketing of CCE. “For example, a manufacturing engineer can quickly identify all of the parts in an assembly that fall within a specified clearance in order to verify that a certain manufacturing process can hold the needed tolerances.”

Optimizing Sail Design for the 2008 Olympics Using 3D Air Flow Simulation

Optimizing Sail Design for the 2008 Olympics Using 3D Air Flow Simulation
Finland-based sail maker WB-Sails is using EFD.Lab fluid dynamics simulation software from Flomerics to develop and optimize sails for Star and Finn class Olympic sailboats. “Our traditional panel codes predict sail forces reasonably well in the upwind case, when flow separation is not a major factor, but we were desperate for something more powerful to predict 3D air flow and sail forces on downwind legs and in the lighter winds that we expect in Beijing,” said Mikko Brummer, Head of R&D at WB-Sails.

Flotherm Simulation Helps Redback Networks Create First Million-Subscriber Platform for Triple-Play Broadband, Phone and TV Services

Flotherm Simulation Helps Redback Networks Create First Million-Subscriber Platform for Triple-Play Broadband, Phone and TV Services
Thermal simulation with Flomerics’ Flotherm software helped Redback Networks overcome the cooling challenges involved in creating the first million-subscriber triple-play platform. “The power dissipation of the line cards in the new platform had to be increased by 2X relative to the previous generation to obtain the planned improvement in performance and functionality,” said Wendy Lu, Mechanical Engineer for Redback Networks. “By focusing on reducing the chassis static pressure via geometry changes and using a higher performing fan, we were able to double the airflow in the chassis.”

Flow Simulation Helps Solve Power LED Overheating Problem in One Day

Flow Simulation Helps Solve Power LED Overheating Problem in One Day
Voxdale used Flomerics’ EFD.Pro computational fluid dynamics software to solve a power light emitting diode thermal management problem in just one day. The initial prototype of the LED system overheated to the point that the amount of light delivered by the device and its lifetime were both substantially reduced. Voxdale engineers used the CFD results to redesign the housing in just one day to improve airflow, which eliminated overheating and increased light output and life to the desired levels.

FLOTHERM Achieves 95% Customer Satisfaction in New Survey

FLOTHERM Achieves 95% Customer Satisfaction in New Survey
More than 95% of the users of Flomerics’ Flotherm thermal simulation software said in a recent survey that they were satisfied with Flotherm. Of the Flotherm users, 36.6% said they were very satisfied and 58.8% said they were fairly satisfied with only 3.9% saying they were slightly dissatisfied and 0.7% very dissatisfied. An even higher percentage said they would recommend Flotherm with 31.4% saying they would strongly recommend and 66.7% saying they would recommend Flotherm to others. Only 2% said they would not recommend Flotherm. The survey respondents also clearly perceive Flomerics Flotherm thermal analysis software as the market leader, with 73.2% naming this software package as compared to only 9.2% for the number two software.

Four-Fold Increase in Educational Sites Using Flomerics EFD Software

Since Flomerics announced its EFD for Education Initiative a year ago there has been a four-fold increase in the number of sites using its popular Engineering Fluid Dynamics (EFD) software for teaching and research purposes. Flomerics aims to ensure that mechanical engineering students and researchers have access to the latest fluid dynamics software used in industry. Unlike traditional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation software, EFD operates inside the mechanical CAD tools that engineers are familiar with – without any transfer of data.

New Video from Flomerics and Matchstick Productions Explains Human Flight in Wingsuits

New Video from Flomerics and Matchstick Productions Explains Human Flight in Wingsuits
Flomerics and Matchstick Productions have released a short video, available at : //www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q09fO5SqHIo, which for the first time reveals the complex 3D airflow around a wingsuit that enables human beings to glide through the air like a bird. The video combines actual footage of human flight in wingsuits with airflow simulations using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. The actual wingsuit flight segments come from the film “Seven Sunny Days” by Matchstick Productions. Flomerics’ EFD family of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software was used to calculate the fluid flows and pressures that produce lift and drag forces that enable wingsuit fliers to glide with an extraordinary level of control that enables them to trace the contours of rock ledges and other obstacles from just a few feet away.

Thermal Simulation Speeds Design of Versatile Vertical/Horizontal Heatsink

Thermal Simulation Speeds Design of Versatile Vertical/Horizontal Heatsink
Crane Aerospace & Electronics used Flomerics’ Flotherm thermal simulation software to develop an unusual heatsink that works in the vertical or horizontal orientation. The heatsink is for a DC power subsystem for a commercial airliner. Developing an entirely new heatsink geometry that would have met the performance requirements would have taken an enormous amount of time using conventional build and test methods. Instead Crane Mechanical Engineer Mark Resler simulated a range of different heatsink configurations using thermal simulation software. He determined that an unusual design with a plate and standoffs provided the best performance.
