Wilcoxon Research introduces isolator bases for accelerometers
Wilcoxon Research announced that it will add isolator bases to the company’s extensive line of vibration sensor mounting accessories. The new isolator mounting bases protect a vibration sensor from up to 1500 volts of electricity by electrically isolating it from the case of the machine on which it is mounted.
High voltage spikes can damage an accelerometer. Isolator mounts can be used to prevent the voltage spike from reaching the sensor by electrically isolating it from the case of the machine. The high voltage potential is not transmitted to the accelerometer, providing another level of protection against static electricity build-up and ESD shocks, improper grounding, poor ground bonding, poor earth-ground coupling, ground loops and different ground potential. These conditions are common in manufacturing environments, where accelerometers are an integral part of condition monitoring and predictive maintenance programs that minimize downtime and save money.

Wilcoxon Research has released four models of this new product, all of which electrically isolate the sensor from up to 1500 volts of electricity for as long as one minute and withstand temperatures up to 120º C. The SF21 and SF22 isolator bases are both 1 inch (25mm) across the flats with a 0.82 inch (20 mm) mounting pad that can accommodate up to medium diameter Wilcoxon accelerometers that range in size from the 780A to the 786A, and small diameter side-exit accelerometers such as the 775A. The SF23 and SF24 isolator bases are both 1-1/8 inch (29 mm) across the flats with a 0.94 inch (24 mm) mounting pad that can accommodate large diameter Wilcoxon top-exit sensors that range in size from the 793 to the PC420 4-20 mA vibration sensor series.

All four isolator bases have a 1/4-28 integral stud on the accelerometer side, which is the top of the isolator base. The integral stud on the side that mates with the machine, the bottom, can be ordered in two common sizes, either 1/4-28 or M8. The 1/4-28 and M8 studs are standard sizes for tapped holes when mounting accelerometers.
