Light SCBA cylinder for firefighter life support

Luxfer’s ECLIPSE cylinder was launched at the US FDIC exhibition in April. ECLIPSE is an acronym for Extra-lightweight Cylinders by Luxfer for Industry Professionals in SCBA Environments. Luxfer pioneered the first significant SCBA (Self-contained Breathing Apparatus) cylinder design change in over twenty years; resulting in the ECLIPSE reportedly being the world’s lightest composite cylinder for SCBA.

The cylinders are based on a next-generation aerospace-grade carbon fibre-only overwrap design; reinforcing the cylinder’s lightweight aluminium liner while maintaining the highest safety, reliability and durability standards and remaining compliant with all industry standards.

This weight-saving design enhances performance and minimises weight-related health risks for firefighters, emergency personnel and SCBA industry professionals. The ECLIPSE is up to 20% lighter than comparable aluminium-lined (Type three) composite cylinders and up to three percent lighter than plastic-lined (Type four) cylinders used primarily in Europe.

Professor Denise Smith, Director of the Skidmore College First Responder Health and Safety Laboratory and a global expert on firefighter health, commented: “With cardiac events currently the leading cause of line-of-duty deaths, firefighters and SCBA manufacturers should embrace opportunities to decrease the cardiovascular strain associated with firefighting. Significantly decreasing the weight of the SCBA cylinder while retaining the same level of respiratory protection suggests that Luxfer ECLIPSE will become the new de facto standard in the SCBA industry.”
