Innovative SKF parking brake for agricultural vehicles improves safety and cuts operating costs
An innovative new Electronic Parking Brake for tractors and agricultural vehicles has been launched by SKF. The new hybrid system is based on a mechanical emergency brake combined with a patented SKF intelligent electro-mechanical actuator, which operates on a conventional transmission parking brake. This system provides a number of important benefits, improving braking efficiency and operator safety, while reducing overall emissions and operating costs.
The new SKF Electronic Parking Brake incorporates a specially developed geared motor and actuator, contained in a sealed housing, plus an electronic control unit, which is integrated into the in-cab operator controls. The parking brake is operated by an electronic signal from the cab, with the motor being used to extend or retract a conventional brake cable by driving the actuator shaft via a simple gearing arrangement.

This system is extremely reliable and, unlike existing parking brakes where the operator has to engage a manually operated brake, often requiring up to 40kg of force, enables considerable brake force to be applied quickly and simply almost at the press of a button. In addition, operator safety and vehicle functionality are improved still further as the electronic controls offer a range of features including Automatic Apply, which operates when the key is off and the driver leaves his seat, Hill Holder and Drive Away, for smooth brake release and vehicle acceleration.

The ability to remove the handbrake lever and related mechanical cable connections from the driver cab also helps to reduce noise and increases the space available for other equipment. Similarly, by improving the efficiency of the braking mechanism, the new system helps to reduce wear on brake and associated parts and, by minimising frictional losses, also helps to reduce fuel consumption.

The new Electronic Parking Brake has been designed so that it is easy for OEMs to install during manufacture and can also be retrofitted during vehicle overhaul or upgrades. The system is backed by SKF’s global network of customer service, spares and technical support centres.
