Back in 2013, SKF announced it had acquired Cooper Roller Bearings as part of the US based Kaydon Corporation, Cooper's parent company at the time. Following a period of consolidation within the SKF, it has now been decided that all Cooper Split Bearings ranges will be marketed under the name of SKF Cooper going forward.

At AGRITECHNICA, the trade fair for agricultural machinery and equipment, SKF will be presenting its combined PEER and SKF branded solutions. The 2017 edition of the bi-annual event will take place on 12th-18th November in Hannover, Germany. Visitors can see the SKF offering in Hall 15 at Stand D35.

  Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has selected manufacturer, SKF to supply front and rear wheel hub bearings for new Jeep Compass SUV. The new compact sport utility vehicle is equipped with SKF’s third-gen, premium quality, front and rearwheel Hub-Bearing Units (HBU3).

To provide its customers with direct control over active magnetic bearing tuning and to increase their wider adoption, SKF has introduced a certified tuning service for its magnetic bearings. The new service called ‘certified tuning E300V2’ leverages the capabilities of the E300V2 control cabinet for SKF S2M magnetic bearings. The development is a spin-off from a previous subsea electronic system developed for the Norwegian Åsgard project and offers the ability to monitor and control magnetic bearings from a remote location.

Designed for a Polysius Polycom 8 roller press at a large copper mine in Peru, SKF’s Gothenburg factory has produced the company’s largest sealed Spherical Roller Bearing (SRB) to date. The ‘241/900’ SRB is 50% larger and three times heavier than the previous largest SKF sealed SRB.

  Looking at established technologies such as condition monitoring and smart, sensor-equipped bearings; Phil Burge, Marketing and Communications Manager at SKF claims that extending the digitalisation here could revolutionise manufacturing.

Taking another lead in the sector, SKF has created two new and innovative service packages that address the rapidly changing needs of customers facing skills shortages, the challenges of global competition and market volatility, and the need to implement new manufacturing paradigms such as Industry 4.0.

  SKF has developed a new handheld instrument which combined with a smartphone app simplifies the collection and interpretation of critical machine condition data. The new QuickCollect sensor is SKF’s latest developed in moving towards digitalisation.

  To help rail operators spend their maintenance budgets more effectively, SKF has a developed a wireless condition monitoring system to enable Condition Based Maintenance practices (CBM).

Bearing design and integration technology from SKF has helped Siemens and Bombardier to create a new generation of passenger trains for Germany’s national rail operator Deutsche Bahn.

The company’s recently re-envisaged vision and mission is to create ‘a world of reliable rotation’. Engineering Specifier recently attended the company’s technical day based around the idea of digitalisation, where Victoria van Camp, SKF’s CTO and President, Innovation and Business Development, painted a picture of SKF’s digitalisation roadmap, covering all aspects including product development, manufacturing, logistics, business models and examples.

The Paris Air Show, which takes place later this month, will see SKF Aerospace demonstrate its engineering capabilities for major fixed wing, helicopter, engine and gearbox programmes. The aerospace industry is requiring innovation and technological advancements to support products and services, and push the boundaries of performance.  

Demounting and reassembling flanged power transmission couplings in a single-step operation is now a possibility for maintenance engineers using SKF’s new Quickgrip Bolts. Designed for high-torque rotating flanges, the new SKF Quickgrip Bolts, as well as existing SKF Supergrip Bolts, can be used to connect two flanged shafts quickly, safely and reliably. This applies to all types of propulsion systems, as well as rudders and other critical applications.

  The newly developed wind turbine main shaft spherical roller bearings, introduced by SKF, have been manufactured to deliver outstanding reliability. These self-aligning bearings provide exceptional performance and meet service life needs of more than 25 years.

The high performance, long-life bearings range from SKF Explorer now includes an improved single row angular contact ball bearing that delivers a number of benefits for designers and operators of screw compressors, pumps and gearboxes seeking to reduce the total cost of ownership of this equipment through improved reliability and energy efficiency.

The latest generation of electrically insulated bearings from SKF have raised the performance standard to provide constant electrical performance, even in high humidity. SKF’s INSOCOAT bearings range comprises bearings with an electrically insulating coating on the external surfaces of its inner or outer ring, plasma-sprayed with an aluminium oxide coating.

A next-generation Internet-enabled condition-based maintenance (CBM) and condition monitoring (CM) system has been launched by SKF, the Enlight Centre, which is designed for the global marine industry. SKF Enlight Centre is a first-of-its-kind, asset based (as opposed to measurement focused) machine health monitoring system, featuring a radically simplified user interface, designed for use by engineers and managers throughout the marine sector.

SKF is making its high performance RSH seal design available on a larger range of SKF Explorer deep groove ball bearings. The tried and tested RSH seal uses a highly optimised dual-lip configuration to provide additional protection in demanding environments. For users, the result is bearings that last longer, especially in wet, contaminated or dusty operating conditions, and that need to be replaced less frequently.
