Major Auto Parts Supplier Chooses Victrex APTIV™ Film For Its Automotive Seat Motor Thrust Washers
When S&T Daewoo, a major Korean auto parts supplier, wanted a plastic film to replace the steel in its seat motor thrust washers for the company’s flagship automobiles, it chose Victrex APTIV™ film because of the product’s superb durability, wear-resistance and inherent lubricity.
In some cases, conventional steel thrust washers wear out. In the seat motor environment where the seat motors control the seat’s reclining angle and position, thrust washers need to withstand approximately 4,000 RPM and pressures of 10 kg/m2 (2.05 lb. / square foot). In this environment not only do the washers wear out, but the surrounding parts also wear out, resulting in the need for frequent replacements.

To solve these problems, S&T Daewoo tested a number of plastic materials including PA66 and POM. These, however, did not provide the required level of wear-resistance. In contrast, when the APTIV film was tested, it demonstrated outstanding wear resistance and durability, and scored very well in lubrication tests. According to S&T Daewoo’s Senior Researcher Heo, Dong Suk, “The selection of APTIV film was the obvious choice because it is essential for us to ensure both functionality and long service life of our products.”

Victrex APTIV films are based on VICTREX® PEEK™ polymer, a high performance thermoplastic. They feature key performance properties such as excellent wear and broad chemical resistance in a flexible format. Its versatility and high performance satisfy the increasing demand for lighter weight, durable, lower cost and eco-friendly application design.

Known for its outstanding technological achievements, S&T Daewoo has earned recognition around the world for its high standards when it comes to car quality. While the company uses other types of film based on engineering polymers such as PA66 for different applications, it is considering switching to APTIV film for applications that demand a longer service life. This is in support the current industry trend of longer product warranties.
