With 220 companies in the industry, and an area of 2-million hectares under cultivation, Brazil is the fourth largest producer of cellulose worldwide: its output of 12.7- thousand tons a year putting it behind only the US, China and Canada. However, output in Brazil is set to change this situation; recent reports from the authoritative Brazilian Association of Paper and Cellulose, show that over the last 10- years investments in the sector have totaled some US$ 12bn, and are set to increase further.

Teka, located in Blumenau in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, is one of the leading producers of bed, bath and table linens in South America. As part of its strategic planning, the company has developed two programs: the first concerns replacing burnt-out motors with high efficiency types; and the second, replacement of motors following power consumption audits.

WEG Middle East has successfully overcome a tough challenge to engineer and supply – at short notice – 250kW HGF motors to fit in the same space envelope previously occupied by three 132kW Loher pump motors, at the Daleel Petroleum Oil Field in, Oman. The ability of WEG to provide the motors and VFD drives – all with 3- year warranty - is enabling Daleel Petroleum to increase the output of three crude oil shipping pumps by 45% respectively; each pump now being capable of shipping 16000 bpd, instead of 11,000 bpd previously. This increase also offers the advantage of enabling one pump to be withdrawn at any time for maintenance, without Daleel Petroleum incurring penalties for falling below its contracted pumping rate of 30,000bpd.

Famous across the world for its traditional aguardente (a strong alcoholic beverage obtained from sugarcane) the Ypióca group is investing in a new market: ethanol. The company has just inaugurated the Jaguaruana mill in the state of Ceará. Brazil. This has the capacity to produce between 40 and 60 million liters/year of ethanol, around 90 million liters/year of cachaça (another name for aguardente), as well as the capability to produce neutral alcohol. Totally automated, the new plant is the result of an investment of approximately US$ 145,580 mil. It’s one of the most modern in the world and it’s strategic for the company. With the new mill, the goal is to supply one third of the market of Ceará with ethanol for the next three to four- years, and increase the turnover of the group by around 20%. Today, Ceará imports 160 million liters/year of ethanol and practically all the product goes to gas pumps.

The first W22 high efficiency motors supplied by WEG in Europe - 3 off 200kW machines - are (appropriately) engaged in a ‘green’ process for the production of sustainable bio-fuels. The 4-pole 315L frame W22 motors have been supplied to BioWanze in Belgium. They are used with inverters in a mill that processes wheat and beet syrup to produce bio-ethanol. With this innovative system, BioWanze intends eventually to provide half the amount of the bio-fuel consumed in Belgium.

WIMES – the Water Industry Mechanical and Electrical Specification, is one of the key tools used by the UK water industry in its continuing drive to improve efficiency and reduce operating costs. The UK water industry is one of the largest consumers of industrial electricity, due, in the main, to its wide use of pumping systems. Some water companies have calculated that approximately 90% of their annual energy consumption is attributable to the pumping of water. However, studies have shown that using higher efficiency drive systems could save 30% to 50% of this energy.

WEG’s new WQuattro line of super premium efficiency motors employs a hybrid design to achieve the highest efficiency in the market, exceeding the requirements of the impending IE4 Super Premium Efficiency classification across its entire output range.

New NEMA motors reduce losses between 10% and 40% compared to competitive units

WEG has developed a special control panel which monitors the ventilation circuits, temperature, humidity, lighting and feeder lines for Plasson, a company that both manufactures equipment and sells services for Aviculture. The system provided by WEG ensures better use of feed ration, optimises environmental requirements and delivers higher quality and productivity.

WEG Germany GmbH has supplied a 45-tonne, 14,000kW, 10,000V high voltage slipring motor for the testing of huge radial, axial, and geared compressors at MAN Turbo AG’s Oberhausen plant. Designed and manufactured by WEG to exacting customer specifications, the ‘M’-Line slip ring motor is special due to its highly robust design, which enables it to withstand the rigours of movement around the test area, by cranes and lifting tools, and yet still provide reliable operation under severe test conditions. In addition, the motor has two conical shafts, allowing the connection of steam turbines or expanders to the second shaft end, raising its mechanical transfer rating to 20,000 KW.

The CFW-08 Wash is designed for applications that require a higher degree of protection against the ingress of contaminants; the drive’s IP56 (Nema 4X) rating providing effective safeguarding against the ingress of dust and water.
