Industry and academia join forces to bridge the skills gap
A course developed by the University of Salford, aimed at tackling critical skills shortages, has just enrolled a group of engineers from Siemens. Designed in a partnership with Siemens to meet a growing skills gap in industry, the BEng (Hons) Control and Automation degree will have a flexible delivery model to suit industry needs and minimise time off the job. It includes content developed and delivered by Siemens, as well as expertise and knowledge provided by Salford academics.

Siemens has extended its partner network across the UK. Central Group is now a Distribution Partner for Siemens’ LV motors and couplings. Central Group already provides expertise in the maintenance and repair of pumps and alternators. The partnership will see it now also offer Siemens’ complete portfolio of low voltage motor products covering a performance range from 0.09 to 4000 kW to end users and OEMs within the utilities, chemicals, metals, paper, food & beverage, oil & gas and renewables markets.

The partnership sees the distributor appointed as a UK Drives Technical Partner for its Large Drives products and solutions. The Sinamics S210 converter from Siemens was designed specifically for use with the newly developed Simotics S-1FK2 motors, now the company is offering a new servo drive system in five power classes ranging from 50-750W. The converters come with integrated safety functions and enable rapid engineering. In addition, they are connected to the higher-level controller over Profinet and allow simple commissioning using a web server and one-button tuning.
