Innovation to foster a sustainable future

Innovation to foster a sustainable future
Building circularity into product development is challenging, but it’s something manufacturers should be doing in the interests of our planet. Leading the way for sustainable innovation, the team in Svedala, represented by Jörgen Petersson and Anders Åkesson of Sandvik Rock Processing Solutions (SRP) developed a circularity program for the manufacturing of premium rock crushing chambers. In recognition of this project, Petersson and Åkesson have been presented with Sandvik Group’s sustainability award for 2021.

How 3D printed motor nodes became a gamechanger in e-bikes

How 3D printed motor nodes became a gamechanger in e-bikes
Motor nodes are one of the hardest e-bike parts to manufacture. When GSD Global turned to Sandvik’s experts in metal powder and additive manufacturing, to 3D print their motor nodes in titanium, they found they could achieve a lighter, more durable and much more energy efficient solution.

How Sandvik has encouraged steel circularity

How Sandvik has encouraged steel circularity
Extractive industries such as mining are responsible for 50% of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. However, recycling steel from mining equipment could make all the difference. Here, Anders Åkesson, QM EHS Manager, Crushing & Screening at Sandvik Mining & Rock Technology (SMRT), Sandvik Group, explains how Sandvik has encouraged steel circularity in the mining industry.

How can we sustainably manufacture steel?

How can we sustainably manufacture steel?
If the Eiffel Tower was built today, it would require just 25% of the steel used for its construction in 1887. This is one example of the impressive development of material science. But as material science develops, so too does the need to find more efficient ways of producing important metals such as steel. Here, Mats W Lundberg, Sustainable Business Manager at Sandvik Materials Technology, explores some of ways to sustainably manufacture steel.

Cutting costs, while saving the planet

Cutting costs, while saving the planet
The main driver of business sustainability goals is to make an impact on the wider world. Another benefit that is often overlooked is the economic value of implementing sustainable actions. Can businesses save money, while helping to protect the planet? Here, Sachin Pimpalnerkar, Global Segment Manager for Renewable Energy at Sandvik, explains how Sandvik Machining Solutions (SMS) has optimised two crucial toolmaking technologies to achieve just that.

How one production plant went remote in just two days

How one production plant went remote in just two days
The year 2020 has transformed the way many of us work. While makeshift desks and digital collaboration have been commonplace for many workers, surely manufacturing employees couldn’t set-up a shop floor from the comfort of their own kitchens - or could they? Digitalising a production plant typically takes years of development, but one Sandvik tube site brought remote manufacturing to its stay-at-home workers in just two days. Here, Thomas Froböse, Product Unit Manager at Sandvik, explains how.

Steel: the new raw material as a service

Steel: the new raw material as a service
Although the industry calls it scrap, steel is a valuable resource as a secondary raw material. Whether it’s the steel contained in products at the end of their useful life, or the material left over from the manufacturing process, there’s more industry can do to reduce its reliance on virgin material. Here, Advanced Engineering UK interviews Mats W Lundberg, Sustainable Business Manager at Sandvik Materials Technology.

Taking the art of pizza making to the next level

Taking the art of pizza making to the next level
To achieve a cleaner, safer and quieter working environment, many industries have begun to upgrade their heating technologies, replacing their gas furnaces with electric alternatives. Unlikely as it sounds, this has led to an engineering business breaking the record for the fastest pizza in the world - which cooks in just 37 seconds.
