Carter’s cool centenary of manufacturing in Brum
One hundred years on and Carter Environmental Engineers of Birmingham are still busy designing, manufacturing and installing a wide range of industrial water cooling & air pollution abatement equipment.
The company that began life as the Midland Heating & Ventilation Company in 1909 has held firm during the current downturn, and far from asking its 50 staff to work for less or temporarily for free, Carter actually awarded its team a pay rise at the beginning of 2009.

Three of the employees at the firm’s city centre home in Lawley Middleway – Alan Holmes, Steve Woodward and Charlie Smith -have each clocked up more than 40 years service, whilst the father of current Sales Director Colin Brown was an apprentice with the company before it became known as Carter.

“Our centenary celebration”, said Colin “is a big thank you to our loyal staff and a long service award to this company which is very much part of Birmingham’s manufacturing past, present and importantly, future. We are a living, breathing example that there’s still plenty of life in the city’s manufacturing”.
As part of the Carter Thermal Industries Group, Carter Environmental Engineers enjoys all the backing of one of the UK's most substantial privately owned engineering Groups. The Group employs in excess of 800 people, has approximately a quarter of a million square foot of manufacturing space and a turnover in excess of £65,000,000. All companies within the Group are committed to Engineering Excellence.
