BOS 23K – A bright idea – the new standard in optical object detection

With their new BOS 23K family of sensors, consisting of through-beam, retro-reflective, diffuse and background suppression models, Balluff has set new standards in optical object detection. Visible red light and laser versions for precision alignment, together with long ranges and compact uniform housing styles ensure great freedom in equipment design and at a favourable price/performance ratio.

The star among these “visionaries” is the diffuse model with background suppression, which tops its class with a range of up to 1.2 m. The highly visible red light spot (even in daylight) with sharp edges helps to align the sensor. Precise adjustment of the background suppression is accomplished using an 18-turn potentiometer and display window for range setting. The very low gray value shift (3% at 600 mm) allows the sensor to detect objects of various colours absolutely reliably even against a reflecting background.

The energetic diffuse sensor, the retro-reflective model as well as the through-beam type also allow the user to set the sensing range using a remote connection. This is especially helpful when the sensor must be installed in an inaccessible location. Furthermore, dynamic teaching of the sensor function is possible in-process. The sensors also include a button disable function to protect from unauthorized or unintended manipulation.

The rugged, fibreglass reinforced plastic housing with IP 67 protection and ICOLAB approval ensures reliable operation even under harsh ambient conditions. A side optics guard also prevents possible damage to the Fresnel lenses. The 360° visible LEDs make it easier to calibrate the sensor.

Two integrated dovetail guides on the housing provide for variable mounting options. A wide range of accessories is also available for the BOS 23K. For example the sensor can be fully protected against mechanical effects by using the BAM01FM mounting bracket.

The BOS 23K is used in virtually every area of industrial automation. Its strengths are seen especially when detecting changing objects against varying surfaces, such as shiny or dark objects against a bright background. In industries where rugged sensors are required, including the automobile, wood and paper industries, the BOS 23K is always the right choice with its long ranges and rugged plastic housing with side optics protection as well as ECOLAB certification.
