Balluff’s BML Magnetic Linear Encoder system consist of a sensing head and magnetically encoded tape making a highly precise, fast-response and very rugged measuring system. As the system works magnetically, in contrast to optical systems it is very insensitive to contamination from oil, dust etc. These characteristics make it ideal for use in harsh, dusty industrial environments.

The BML works on the principle that the sensor head glides over magnetized tape with alternating polarity with a gap of up to 2mm. The period changes are available on the sensor output as standard square wave or sinusoidal signals. Counting and processing of the signals is accomplished using the standard incremental or sine counter inputs on the processor. Resolution down to 1µm and an accuracy of 10µm can be achieved. The permissible traverse speed is up to 20m/s and the measured value is in fractions of a second, the controller receiving the position signal in real-time.

Two series are currently available the BMF SA1/SA1F and the S2B/S2E/S1C. The BMF SA1/S1F series offers two robust metal housed sensing heads for its high-resolution system. Both detect reference points on the magnetic tape. The S1A sensing head can also detect system limit switches and provides additional switching functions as a result, the S1F sensing head is an extremely compact design, therefore easy to integrate into systems with restricted installation space.

The S2B/S2E/S1C series offers three variations for adapting your system to any measurement task in combination with the three sensor heads. An appropriate resolution and degree of accuracy can be selected in line with the application and reference points can be integrated. All three have a compact design and the same dimensions through the series, making them extremely flexible to integrate.
To complement the system a number of accessories are available including counters, displays and sliding carriages to integrate perfectly into your application. The sliding carriage can be used wherever long paths have to be measured without any precise guidance by the machine, such as sheet metal presses, cutting installations and material handling technology.

For applications where monitoring of rotary movements are required, Balluff also offer Magnetic Rings with high resolution. Synchronous run monitoring is now easy to implement.

Balluff Limited is the subsidiary of Balluff GmbH, Neuhausen, Germany, is a leading manufacturer of a wide range of inductive, optical, vision, capacitive and magnetic sensors as well as linear position transducers, Industrial RFID systems, connectivity and safety solutions.
