A welding automation company was looking for a compact alternative to position a gauge box for holding four plates to be welded together to make a telescoping crane boom.
The company turned to Serapid for two special Rigid Chain Push/Pull systems. Serapid’s Rigid Chain systems are capable of long stroke and heavy load capacity, with harsh-environment models available.

Key considerations in this project were the harsh weld environment and the frequency of the operation. The chain is constantly exposed to weld spatter and smoke. The weld is performed once an hour, every hour, six days per week. The operation takes place while the system is pushed out 17 feet.

Serapid provided the customer with two Rigid Chain Push/Pull Systems to accommodate their special needs. The new Serapid system reduced the length of their original system from 100 feet to 36 feet.

The first system, which guides the gauge box, has special oversized rollers and side roller brackets. A specially machined housing was designed to accommodate the oversized rollers.

The second system also has oversize rollers, gripper plates, as well as, pins to attach the electrical hose carriers. This system includes special-machined zero-degree housing to create a straight through chain drive.
