MAPAL has developed a range of CVD-coated cutting materials that increase tool life by up to 300% for boring operations in cast metals, including GJL, GJV and GJS. The new HC720, HC725, HC730 and HC735 cutting materials incorporate an extremely heat resistant alpha-aluminium oxide coating with excellent adhesion characteristics, and differ only in the carbide substrate used.
Tools with ISO inserts are first choice when it comes to the boring of cast materials. As the need for higher cutting speeds and better cooling technologies rises, demands on the tools and cutting edges also increase. Very good friction and wear behaviour, as well as high hot hardness of the coating are therefore, essential.
Until now, these requirements have most usually been met in boring operations by using tools with PVD-coated cutting edges, but the latest MAPAL developments allow superior CVD coatings to be used.
Cutting edges with the new coatings offer the potential for a significant increase in the cutting speed during boring, even with dry machining. Machining is easily possible with a cutting speed of 300 m/min, thus offering a considerable boost in productivity. At the same time, the cutting edges achieve significantly longer tool lives. When machining GJL25, for example, practical tests have shown that the tool life is three times that of a tool with the PVD cutting material HP455 previously used.
The complete standard MAPAL product range of indexable blades for ISO boring tools is now available with the new coatings.
