MAPAL has developed a tool concept that makes the machining of bores with medium to large diameters and long projection lengths more productive and significantly more reliable. MAPAL’s spring-loaded guide pads offer smooth running and high cutting speeds, which translate to significant timesaving, machine stability and process reliability.

Traditionally, engineers have found that boring operations on large bore depths presented them with two fundamental challenges. The long projection length of the tools in conjunction with a large tool head led to vibration, and the inhomogeneous material structure of the raw part required different stock removal rates.

For this reason, single- or twin-bladed spindle tools with low dead weight have been generally used. Unfortunately, the downside of these types of tools is that they can only be operated at low cutting speeds in order to achieve process reliability.

The new machining solution offered by MAPAL – spring-loaded guide pads (for which a patent is pending) – increases the process reliability and accelerates machining. In addition, tool heads can be designed to accommodate up to eight indexable inserts.

The stability and reliability of the machining operation is ensured through a combination of conventional, fixed brazed and spring-loaded guide pads.

The spring-loaded guide pads are positioned in such a way that the resulting spring force makes the fixed guide pads lie perfectly against the material of the bore and support the tool. This guarantees smooth machining even with fluctuating stock removal rates or wear of the inserts. As a result, excellent bore qualities are achieved even with high cutting speeds.
