Strong Showing For Vision At Total Show

While the dedicated Vision and Robotics Pavilion at the recent Total Processing & Packaging show provided a focal point for UKIVA (UK Industrial Vision Association) and BARA (British Automation and Robotics Association) members offering vision and robotics equipment and services, it was interesting to note that over 20 of the other exhibitors also featured vision as elements in their various systems. Most of these vision systems were providing an inspection capability at the end of a packaging line or guiding robots to handle products at high speed.

Also of interest was that just as many exhibitors were identified as being potential users of vision as part of their systems, but not showing it at the event. The proportion of exhibitors making use of vision was significantly higher than that seen at the PPMA (Processing & Packaging Machinery Association) show in September 2009. Inspection capabilities at Total also included X-ray inspection, which made use of image processing techniques in just the same way as conventional optical images.

These observations reinforce the premise that vision is rapidly becoming an integral part of automation in manufacturing industry, and this is a key factor in helping UK manufacturing to be competitive in world markets. Now that both the UKIVA and BARA are Special Interest Groups of the PPMA, the PPMA provides a ‘one stop shop’ for automation in the UK. The combination of robotics and image processing enables the fault free, fast, reliable and economic manufacture and quality assurance of all kinds of products in many areas.
