Sandvik Coromant expertise and product solutions promised at world’s leading composites exhibition

With demand for composite components continuing to grow in sectors such as aerospace, automotive, motorsport and energy, increasing numbers of machine shops are seeking support in terms of both solutions and knowledge. Cutting tool and tooling systems specialist Sandvik Coromant will bring to JEC Europe a breadth of product innovations and process expertise accumulated over many years of working with these advanced engineering materials. Supported by the company’s Global Drilling and Composite Machining Research Center in Sheffield, UK, and many worldwide competence centers, the company has a proven track record in overcoming the challenges presented when machining composites.

Composites intelligence

It is well documented that machining carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) composite materials presents many challenges in terms of tool life, productivity and quality control. With this in mind, selecting the best machining solutions and support are vital for the successful manufacture of composite parts.

Sandvik Coromant will be represented at JEC Europe by its Yellow Coat team of composite application specialists, who will be pleased to discuss tool developments and customized designs, as well as specific applications. Show visitors are invited to bring along components or drawings for an initial review of potential machining solutions.

In the spotlight

Among the not-to-be-missed product innovations taking centre stage on the Sandvik Coromant Smart Hub at JEC Europe will be CoroMill® Plura brazed PCD cutters, which are designed specifically for edging, surface milling, slotting and cutting operations on CFRP. Based on a high performance PCD grade optimized for CFRP, the range offers long-lasting and predictable wear patterns – vital when machining composite parts.

Also on show will be a number of CFRP drilling solutions, including CoroDrill® 452, which has been developed to deliver close-tolerance hole making in composite and metallic stack materials. Here, the drill’s low thrust geometries reduce the risk of hole delamination and burrs. JEC Europe visitors will also see the CoroDrill 854/856 range of solid carbide drills for high quality hole making in composite materials.

Vibration-assisted drilling

Visitors to the show on Tuesday 10 March are welcome to attend a special presentation taking place in the Agora area at 11:00. Here, Mohamed Hammadi, Composite Application Manager at Sandvik Coromant, will be discussing the benefits of vibration-assisted drilling with company technology partner, Mitis.

JEC Europe 2015 is taking place on 10-12 March at Porte de Versailles, Paris. Opening hours are 09:00 to 18:00.
