Inspiring the engineers of the future

Now in its fourth year, Tomorrow’s Engineers Week 2016 will take place on 7th-11th November and will showcase engineering careers in a way that young people, and particularly girls, may have never previously considered.

This year the event will call on employers and the industry to inspire young people, their parents and teachers through a host of activities including a nationwide call to uncover the engineers behind the innovations we use today, as well as revealing the role of engineers in places young people wouldn’t expect.

We will also be working with top brands from the engineering industry to create a series of ‘bootcamps’ to inspire young people into engineering careers.

Furthermore, in advance of and during the week, it will be revealed how engineers are shaping the future and making our lives safer, easier and more fun to live. This includes how engineers are creating faster and more efficient rail systems, how engineering will feed the world and how engineering will protect people from flooding.

Chief Executive of EngineeringUK Paul Jackson said: “Engineering is a growth industry that has the potential to continue to drive productivity in the UK. Over 27% of total UK GDP is generated by engineering and the industry now supports 14.5 million jobs overall. However, with a skills gap of 182,000 each year, we need more young people to use their talent in engineering.

“Tomorrow’s Engineers provides a platform for employers to work effectively with schools to inspire more young people to consider a career in engineering. I hope engineers and engineering companies across the UK will come together for Tomorrow’s Engineers Week to showcase the incredible opportunities on offer in their sector and inspire the next generation.”
