Two new full-bridge stepper-motor driver ICs, the A4986 and A4987, have been added to the family of motor driver devices available from Allegro MicroSystems Europe.

The first W22 high efficiency motors supplied by WEG in Europe - 3 off 200kW machines - are (appropriately) engaged in a ‘green’ process for the production of sustainable bio-fuels. The 4-pole 315L frame W22 motors have been supplied to BioWanze in Belgium. They are used with inverters in a mill that processes wheat and beet syrup to produce bio-ethanol. With this innovative system, BioWanze intends eventually to provide half the amount of the bio-fuel consumed in Belgium.

Aerotech's PRO-LM series direct-drive, brushless linear servo motor driven stages now include a new 280 mm wide version, available in eight travel options from 300 mm to 1.5 m, for high throughput and heavy load precision positioning applications in harsh industrial environments. The side-sealed/hard top and fully protected stages feature heavy duty linear motion guide bearings, submicron level encoder feedback and optional cable management, and are now available in nominal widths of 165 mm, 225 mm and 280 mm which may be freely mixed to optimise application load and travel requirements.

When operating under low load conditions, the pressure – and ultimately the efficiency – of the Scuderi Engine prototype increases, and becomes more repeatable from cycle to cycle when one of the two crossover passages is shut off, independent lab tests confirm.

Aerotech's new ASRT series rotary stages feature direct-drive brushless servomotor technology for precise zero backlash positioning in an IP66 sealed design that guarantees operation in hostile environments where dust, dirt and liquids are unavoidable. Aimed at applications involving washdown, dust or mist spray, or where coolants must be used as a part of a machining process, the ASRT series is available in three nominal widths of 185 mm, 245 mm and 300 mm in a dual bearing design that can support axial loads up to 175 kg whilst maintaining a tilt error motion of less than 3 arc-sec.

WIMES – the Water Industry Mechanical and Electrical Specification, is one of the key tools used by the UK water industry in its continuing drive to improve efficiency and reduce operating costs. The UK water industry is one of the largest consumers of industrial electricity, due, in the main, to its wide use of pumping systems. Some water companies have calculated that approximately 90% of their annual energy consumption is attributable to the pumping of water. However, studies have shown that using higher efficiency drive systems could save 30% to 50% of this energy.
