Reflow ovens consume much electricity as a result of the tremendous amount of heat required to process PCB assemblies. Nearly all reflow ovens worldwide consume far more energy than required. This is because oven recipes are selected based on profile and throughput requirements with no consideration of electricity consumption. As a result, there is a significant amount of wasted electricity in factories everywhere.
To help remedy this waste of electricity, KIC has introduced its Energy Wizard software that allows technicians to identify the best oven setup that yields an in-spec process at the required throughput, while simultaneously optimizing for low electricity use. Several case studies indicate a typical electricity reduction of 15 percent while actually improving the process.
Whether the motivation is reduced production cost, a lower carbon footprint or both, the time has come to take the waste out of the reflow oven. Saving energy benefits bottom lines as well as the assembly process.
