AQSENSE recently released their 3D Shape Analysis Library: SAL3D. SAL3D is a C++ software development library for 3D machine-vision industrial applications. It is capable of accurately inspecting parts at production-line speeds. The library features the SAL3D CORE module which has optimised point cloud operations and data types, which provide unparalleled speed and accuracy levels for 3D machine-vision applications.
The main tools in the library are:
• Peak Detector
• Metric Calibration
• Merger 3D
• Match 3D

The AQSENSE SAL3D Peak Detector tool provides unparalleled laser stripe detection for triangulation applications for low-speed applications. It enables height variations of 5 µm to be detected with an angle of 90º between the camera and laser and with fields of view of 130 mm. This tool is also available in a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) implementation for high-speed applications.
The AQSENSE SAL3D Metric Calibration tool provides a straightforward, easy procedure for obtaining the true XYZ metric coordinates from 2.5 D range maps generated by any standard laser triangulation system.

The AQSENSE SAL3D Merger 3D tool allows the minimisation of occlusions or shadows that typically appear in laser triangulation applications. A second camera can see most of the hidden areas that the first camera cannot see. The tool performs a quick and smooth merging of the two range maps coming from both cameras, with very little CPU usage, significant increasing the laser triangulation acquisition quality.

The AQSENSE SAL3D Match 3D tool is a sophisticated piece of software that allows extremely fast alignment and comparison of 3D point clouds with their respective models. Based on a ‘best-fit’ approach, the patent-pending alignment procedure can be used as a tool to quickly determine the position and orientation of objects. This can be combined with the SAL3D Core for an optimized surface subtraction comparison.
