Bionic penguins exhibit collective behaviour at the Hannover Fair

Bionic penguins exhibit collective behaviour at the Hannover Fair
Festo’s Bionic Learning Network has developed two colonies of bionic penguins that demonstrate collective behaviour. This type of behaviour – which psychologists also call crowd behaviour – refers to social processes which emerge in a spontaneous manner when members of a group interact. In robotic terms, each penguin is an autonomous self-regulating unit that is free to explore its defined environment using complex built-in navigation and communication facilities, and is capable of modifying its behaviour in the presence of others, to fulfil a group purpose.

Intelligent control module accommodates multiple electric drives for coordinated movement

Intelligent control module accommodates multiple electric drives for coordinated movement
Festo has launched an intelligent multi-axis control module for electric drives. The new CPX-CMXX module is a highly integrated plug-in unit designed for use with Festo’s renowned CPX series of multifunctional control terminals. The module is particularly easy to configure and set up using Festo’s FCT software tool, and helps dispense with the need for a considerable amount of system wiring, making it a very elegant drop-in control solution for single and multiple axis drives. These attributes will undoubtedly prove popular with OEMs and system integrators seeking to reduce their time to market.

Festo and LeekSeek International announce joint initiative to combat energy wastage

Festo and LeekSeek International announce joint initiative to combat energy wastage
Innovation leaders Festo and leakage management specialists LeekSeek International have announced a joint initiative to combat energy wastage. The two companies are launching a unique energy-saving service for users of pneumatic automation, which provides comprehensive site-wide detection, management and resolution of compressed air leakages. The potential cost savings are huge – industry analysts estimate that European manufacturers currently waste 25-35 per cent of the compressed air that they generate, mainly through leakage caused by bad maintenance practices.

Compact electric rotary actuators provide unlimited 360-degree movement

Compact electric rotary actuators provide unlimited 360-degree movement
Festo has launched a series of electromechanical rotary actuators that provide an exceptional level of movement flexibility. Capable of accommodating literally any desired angle of rotation – including a full 360 degrees and continuous unlimited rotary motion – the ERMB modules set a new standard in rotary positioning performance. The modules feature mounting interfaces on each of their six sides and can be mounted in any position, making them easy to integrate with other axes, and have a large diameter hollow output shaft to facilitate the feed-through of cables and tubing. They are particularly suitable for orienting gripper units at the front end of cantilever axes, and also provide a simple low-cost means of implementing high speed rotary positioning tables.
