Digitalisation and networking are key issues facing industry – and will also feature prominently at EMO Hannover 2019, which opens its doors in September. This year's theme is Smart technologies driving tomorrow's production! – the impact of which extends to the vocational training of future metalworking specialists.

With application-tailored implementation of the umati interface for the machine tool sector, since 2017 clear contents and technical key data for translation into hands-on reality have been drawn up. What this means specifically, and what visitors can expect to see at the EMO Hannover, are explained by three experts.  

With the EMO Hannover show just around the corner, it was interesting to see at the recent preview event what is to be expected, and what some of the exhibiting companies had to say in the run-up to the leading metalwork trade show. From the component, tool and machine tool industry, 38 exhibitors from across nine countries came to pitch their company and latest products and solutions.

Startups are sought after. Many established companies are looking to make contact and cooperate with them and/or invest in them. Thomas Staufenbiel, one of the three founders of Gestalt Robotics GmbH in Berlin, is just such a sought-after businessman. At EMO Hannover, the company is presenting its tailor-made automation and artificial intelligence (AI) software on the startup stand of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology in Hall 9.

Data security is gaining in importance as Industry 4.0 takes shape. Automation, cloud applications and globally networked machines and components play key roles when it comes to shielding systems from external threats. As digitalisation becomes more prevalent across industries, there is a growing need for companies to safeguard against cyber risks.

There is an established tradition of young entrepreneurs presenting their new business models at EMO Hannover. CellCore, a company founded by Andreas Krüger and two of his colleagues at the end of 2016, is one of the exhibitors on the joint startup stand supported by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. Their business model is based on biomimetic engineering in which highly efficient natural structures, optimised by evolution over millions of years, are imitated (mimesis).

Good specialists are the backbone of any company. Employers therefore have to come up with novel ideas to make sure they do not lose these important assets. But how can employers raise their appeal in the age of digital transformation? How should companies recruit junior staff and how can they retain their existing employees? EMO Hannover 2019 provides answers to these questions.

  From the 16th-20th September 2019, EMO Hannover will once again be opening its doors to the large machine tool market. This year's theme is focussing on 'Smart technologies driving tomorrow's production'. The theme will also be highlighted in a new area for individual control technology, software and automation technology exhibitors.

The use of appropriate sensor technology in production is a basic prerequisite for the implementation of Industry 4.0. It collects data on process and machine status as it arises and makes it available for various process-relevant information services and workflows. However, the costs of sensor technology and the variety of possible applications often make it difficult for individual users to appreciate the direct economic benefit.

Recently, even astrophysicists have started taking an interest in EMO Hannover. Garching-based Dr. Theo Steininger and Dr. Maksim Greiner, former PhD students at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics in Garching, have developed Artificial Intelligence (AI) software that makes use of the latest statistical analysis methods developed for astrophysics. Machinists are getting used to the new terminology. Tool manufacturers and their users are now familiar with digital twins, the cloud and the smart evaluation of Big Data. All this is happening in response to the ‘Industrial Internet of Things IIoT’, one of the key themes of EMO Hannover 2019.

The starting shot has been fired for EMO Hannover 2019. The invitation and registration documents for the metalworking trade fair are currently being sent out to around 60 countries. From 16th to 21st September 2019, EMO Hannover will once again be providing a platform for innovative solutions, industrial applications and future technologies in the field of metalworking.

This year’s EMO Hannover will be held 16-21st September with the motto ‘Smart technologies driving tomorrow’s production’, and it will be concentrating on the current paradigm shift in industrial production operations, which are no longer focusing (only) on ‘better, faster, more accurate’, but on the development and implementation of new functions within the framework of Industry 4.0.

If Industry 4.0 was merely the generic term for a new photo or TV application, the publicity slogan for the EMO Hannover 2017 might perhaps be ‘Industry 4.0 – the wish list’ or ‘Industrial Internet of Things – because I’m not stupid’. The fair’s keynote theme of ‘Connecting systems for intelligent production’ is more complex, but has nonetheless been well received among exhibitors.

Industry 4.0 is progressively emerging as the crucial factor in the race for leading edge technology and market shares in the future. And time is running out for the German machinery and plant manufacturers.

The whole world is talking about 3D printing, additive manufacturing and generative multi-layer construction technologies. Nevertheless, this is a long way from meaning that the classical machine tool is going to be pensioned off. The EMO Hannover 2017 will be showcasing an international banquet of production technology – with alternative processes as the highly auspicious icing on the cake.
