  When it comes to specialist vehicles such as caravans, trucks, horseboxes and coaches, the hardware fittings have a very particular requirement, in terms of, for example, safety flush fitting and ease of use, or the need to fit within very thin panels.

A lot has happened since the Millennium, and feedback over the years from developing products to keep pace with industrial needs has driven the development of ubiquitous items like quarter-turn locks and latches which form a core range with companies such as EMKA (UK). Andy Bilingham, Managing Director at EMKA here explains more about the cabinet and enclosure hardware developments in the 21st century.

  Set to be lighter, stronger and better finished in stainless steel is the ‘Everything but the Enclosure’ hardware from EMKA, all thanks to new processes introduced in its manufacturing systems for locks, hinges and swinghandles.

  Recently taking part in the 2017 AHR Expo in Las Vegas, EMKA showed its range of locks, handles, hinges and gaskets designed to meet the present trends in this fast developing marketplace, to support its widening capability in the HVAC related industries.

Providing HVAC manufacturers with a full multi-function hinge/latch/lock, the new concept from EMKA is designed for securing of big air conditioning units and other units similar. It provides door adjustment for correct sealing, 5mm gasket pull down with pressure relief and the ability to be used as both door lock and hinge.

The new programme inspection windows from EMKA, PROflex 1210, offer a simple and aesthetic way of protecting infrequently accessed equipment such as metres, reset buttons, indicators/lamps and instruments as used on fire alarm and suppression systems or engineering controls.

A true 180° opening and rapid assembly has been provided in the new 1056 series EMKA hinge, by the virtue of its design which enables use of industry standard M6 rivet nuts on specialist enclosures and cabinets where previously this may have been a problem.

  For specialist cabinets and enclosures of all types, compression latches are increasingly popular, whether for their anti-vibrational characteristics or for superior sealing, and the new IP65 wing knob format version from EMKA offers more utility.

EMKA/Digitus Biometrics has announced a technology partnership with the BioConnect identity management platform, so that the db Bus and db Sentry provide full control for server cabinet access. The end result is a fully-integrated solution which synchronises with major ACM solutions.

The stainless steel hinges in AISI 316 from EMKA offer all the high performance strength and advanced corrosion resistance benefits of that material. They are suited for use in especially demanding situations such as on cabinets and housings for use in tunnels or offshore.

  A 1000 programme stainless steel L handle, which is both highly corrosion resistant and designed to accept a padlock for security has been introduced from EMKA.

Life has just been made a little bit easier by the ‘Everything but the Enclosure’ people at EMKA for specialist enclosure and cabinet builders, as they can now offer standard two colour pad printing onto swing handles, drawing pockets, air conditioning handles, drawer handles, L handles, T handles and even hinges as required.

  Specialist manufacturing job, the production of multi-compartment control panels requires simple standardised door locks, hinges and a sealing strip, fortunately, EMKA UK have the exact such package of easy to install modular hardware.

EMKA silicone sealing gaskets for cabinets and enclosures offer fire protection to DIN EN 45545-2 and other national/international standards from NF, UNI, ASTM and SMP. They are suitable for road and rail hazard level applications and for high temperature environments for the protection against ingress of dust and water.

The EMKA range of flush compression latches and handles increase safety by not having external projections to catch on clothing. This also presents a neater streamlined visual appearance to specialist cabinets, which minimises opportunities for vandalism by reducing access for tools. This, combined with compression technology, creates a lock resistant to vibration (no nuisance opening) and provides consistent and adjustable compression to optimise sealing with extruded profile sealing strips in materials like EPDM, neoprene or PVC. Specialist cabinets require specialist hinges – in this case EMKA have produced their 1069 series in both zinc plated steel and stainless steel AISI 304 designed for prominent doors (otherwise known as lay-on doors). The 1069 hinge meets production requirements for weld-on or weld-stud and nut fixing, plus its circlip retained removable hinge pin ensures easy assembly and door removal for installation or on-site working.
