As part of a £3 million investment, Northern Ireland Water is upgrading the equipment at Luke's Point pumping station with the installation of two new Archimedes screw pumps, supplied by ECS Engineering Services. Installed in the same footprint as the original equipment, the new pumps will double the capacity of the site, reducing the risk of flooding and helping to meet Northern Ireland Environment Agency standards for water quality.

Maintaining flood defence equipment is a vital aspect of the Environment Agency's role and in many cases it uses engineering partners, such as ECS Engineering Services to plan, design, fabricate and install new equipment. When a fish belly water control gate was identified for replacement after nearly 30 years of service, ECS was tasked to remove and replace the existing equipment as well as fabricating and installing a complete set of stop logs to allow periodic maintenance of the control gate.

ECS Engineering Services has recently completed the move from its original locations in Pinxton to a new, combined facility in Huthwaite, Nottinghamshire. The new premises extend to 50,000 sq ft with a dedicated steel stock yard, a large steel fabrication area and generous office space for the design and project management teams.

With over 200 Archimedes screw pumps in operation across its sites, Scottish Water is one of the largest operators of this type of equipment in the UK. Recently, following a review of its current support network, ECS Engineering Services has been working alongside WGM Engineering in maintaining and extending the service life of these assets. With its extensive experience in Archimedes Screw Pumps and the support of its partner Landustrie, ECS is very well positioned to deliver on this agreement.

Across the country lock gates perform a vital role in allowing boats to travel along the river and canal network but maintaining the ageing infrastructure is an extensive and costly operation. Traditionally made from wood and steel, lock gates require regular inspections and replacement costs can be very high. ECS Engineering Services is launching an innovative technology which delivers a low maintenance, lightweight and very durable alternative.

The Colwick Sluice in Nottingham is a key component of the flood defence apparatus designed to protect the city; one that the Environment Agency (EA) has been upgrading in order to improve the efficiency of essential maintenance work. As part of this project ECS Engineering Services has installed a new semi-automated stoplog deployment system which provides the EA with ‘dry’ access to the sluice gate mechanism, speeding up operations considerably. 

As a framework contractor to the Environment Agency, ECS Engineering Services has won the contract to replace the lock gates at both Marlow and Romney locks on the River Thames. The project will include the design, fabrication and installation of the new lock gates and will be completed by the end of the year.
