As part of a continuous improvement programme, Severn Trent Water identifies and replaces equipment that has reached the end of its service life. A recent project in South Yorkshire involved the replacement of four Archimedes screwpumps that had achieved over 30 years in service. The contract was delivered by ECS Engineering Services as a turnkey solution for the tier 1 contractor, NMCNomenca.

When a piece of pumping equipment wears out, it is usually essential to complete the repair as soon as possible, but when it is on the scale of a large Archimedes screw pump, some expert help is generally needed. So, when one of its screw pumps suffered an unexpected failure, Scottish Water called on ECS Engineering Services to complete the repair work.

UK’s first InfraCore FRP road bridge floated down Thames
Engineers from the Environment Agency (EA) have been able to inspect the first InfraCore road bridge made using fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) after it paused on the River Thames outside Environment Agency offices before continuing on to the installation site at Mapledurham. The 13 metre long bridge, which weighs less than 13 tonnes, was being transported to the weir and lock complex using floating pontoons.

New HDPE flap valve cuts energy consumption for Welsh pumping station
Natural Resources Wales has upgraded one of its drainage pumping stations with the introduction of a new Archimedes screw pump equipped with a new High Density Polyethylene flap valve. The project was designed and installed by ECS Engineering Services with initial energy consumption figures showing a reduction of over 40% compared to the original arrangement.

Having been in service for over 75 years, the tidal gate at West Stockwith in Nottinghamshire has been replaced as part of a continual improvement programme being carried out by the Environment Agency (EA). The project, which took just over 3 months to complete, was awarded to ECS Engineering Services as part of its framework agreement with the EA.

As the Environment Agency (EA) continues its programme to upgrade water control structures on the River Lee, it has contracted ECS Engineering Services to replace the actuators and gearboxes on the sluice gates at Rammey Marsh. The project also delivered improved automation and reliability which reduced maintenance costs.

Work to improve the flood defences in the North Yorkshire village of Skinningrove is continuing with the help of ECS Engineering Services, which has installed and commissioned the latest improvement to the scheme. The latest innovation in fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) technology can now be used to improve the durability of bridge decks in the UK, thanks to ECS Engineering Services, which has the rights to supply and install a range of products constructed using InfraCore Inside technology. ECS Engineering Services has been awarded the contract to replace seven screw pumps as part of a larger contract for NMC Nomenca. Split between two Severn Trent Water sewage treatment plants, the project installations are due to start in October and will run concurrently to ensure a timely completion.

The Environment Agency has been working closely with the local council and residents of the North Yorkshire village of Skinningrove to improve the flood defences, following two devastating events in 2000. ECS has recently been contracted to further improve the scheme with the addition of linear actuators that will lower a set of bridge railings to prevent the build-up of debris during flood conditions.

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) has been undertaking scientific research on and around the Antarctic continent for over 60 years. The extremes of weather mean that the various structures used to house equipment, laboratories, workshops and accommodation are continuously being improved and replaced. ECS Engineering Services has been supporting this work by supplying high specification, bespoke steel fabrications each year for the last 20 years.

ECS continues flood prevention work in South Yorkshire
The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs has continued to award funding to local councils across the country to help with improving flood prevention measures. For Rotherham Borough Council this has enabled them, with the help of the Environment Agency and ECS Engineering Services, to install new trash screens as part of a series of flood alleviation schemes.

New flood defence calls for hydraulic actuated penstock
As the Environment Agency continues its work to improve flood defences around the country, in the Northern region, it has chosen to install a new spillway and hydraulically actuated penstock, which will make the flood defences at Market Weighton, in East Yorkshire, compliant with the 1975 Reservoirs Act. The project included a large trash screen and a new control kiosk all of which was designed and installed by ECS Engineering Services.
