The fatigue strength value of a chain indicates the dynamic load that a chain can continuously withstand without breaking. It is therefore a decisive quality factor, both in chain design and for specification.
For this performance evaluation, the chains were tested using a high-frequency pulsator. Each chain underwent 10 million test cycles to respective manufacturer’s maximum load rating.
The results from the tests demonstrated that Rexnord’s chain outperformed those of its competitors, which comprised manufacturers from China and Europe.
Results of the fatigue tests showed that Rexnord’s 12 B-1 chain with a breaking force of 9.6 kN remained at 33% of normal tensile strength. By comparison, the fatigue strength of competitors’ chains was between 15% and 25% of normal tensile strength.
According to Rexnord, the superior performance of its chain results largely from the consistent bore hole quality of the inner and outer plates, calibration of the plate holes, shot-peening of all individual parts, optimised material hardening and the selection of applied materials. A combination, the company claims, together with superior inner and outer plate construction gives extended life for its roller chains.
‘Quality Chain’, a 52-page catalogue recently published by Rexnord, details the company’s Roller, Leaf and Rotary chains. Data includes performance characteristics, dimensioned diagrams and guidance on chain specification.
