As part of the on-going strategy from the Weldability-Sif Foundation, a Charity designed to positively encourage the development of new welder training facilities within Colleges across the UK, the new Blue Square training centre, run by Sunderland College, is providing future tradesmen and women with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed thanks to a range of vocational training courses on offer including motor vehicle mechanics, bricklaying, carpentry, welding, plumbing, joinery and engineering with the aim of helping students find work in the construction and engineering sector.
Prospective students and employers looking for courses tailored to their needs were invited to an open day on Monday, 28th January 2013, where the centre was officially opened and certificates awarded to the first students who had already completed courses.
Backed by the Weldability SIF Foundation Charity - which has invested £120,000 in the new welding equipment – the centre now has ‘First Class’ training facilities and tutors to give the College’s students sought-after skills in a competitive sector.
Gary Cumiskey, Director of Learning and Standards at Sunderland College, said: “Sunderland College has been working closely with local relevant industries to develop courses that teach the skills that employers need and as a result, give students the best possible start to their careers.”
Weldability-Sif, Managing Director, Adrian Hawkins said: “We are proud to be part of such an important training centre that will help secure the future of the welding industry and lead to highly skilled individuals developing their welding career - a career that can take them anywhere in the world.
The new training centre with the money we have invested represents a belief in the future of British engineering. This college is one of nearly 20 colleges, who are now providing welder training facilities funded by the Foundation Charity, which will be funding further welder training facilities at UK colleges over the next 5 years.”
Like the other training centres already open, this new welder training centres will provide trainee welders with the opportunity to progress from the foundation level through to a passport to practice welding internationally, leading in turn towards higher welding industry qualifications including to the Welding Institute, International Welding Diploma level.
