Hayward Tyler Ltd has announced that the largest subsea motor ever built has been successfully tested. The 2500 kW subsea motor is the first of three ordered by Aker Kvaerner Subsea, a leading provider of surface and subsea solutions for the oil and gas industry, to drive their seawater injection pumps on the StatoilHydro Tyrihans project in the Norwegian Sea. The motors have been developed in close cooperation with Aker Kvaerner Subsea.
The qualified Hayward Tyler design for the 2500 kW variable speed, super synchronous motor will operate at speeds ranging from 2500 to 4000 rpm. The subsea motors will have increased insulation (11 kV) to accommodate the electrical challenges faced by the world’s largest subsea motor and longest step out (31,4 km) from the Kristin platform.

Mark Wood, Group Sales and Marketing Director, Hayward Tyler stated:

This is a significant achievement for Hayward Tyler in terms of technical challenge and engineering capabilities. This special celebration also comes at a time when the Company is celebrating 100 years since manufacturing the first subsea motor back in 1908. We now look forward to delivering the remaining two units to Aker Kvaerner and further developing our product technology to even larger sizes to meet the challenging operating conditions of the subsea market.”

News of these record-breaking developments has created further interest in the market and the Company is now negotiating supply agreements for its subsea motors with a number of Integrators.
