Fast flowing gas with entrained sand results in a highly abrasive medium, so the life expectancy of any level instruments which require exposure to the medium would be severely limited due to the harsh nature of the process.
The ABLE nucleonic system gives a non-contact measurement, which not only reduces potential leak paths, but is also unaffected by the abrasive process in the vessel. It is also extremely useful on a gas well where vessels often run at high pressures.
The measurement is extremely important to the process as any carry over of sand to the downstream equipment in a gas plant, which is expecting low density material devoid of solids, could be fatal for the instrumentation. Sand carry over can damage valves, valve seals and, if carried over into the compressors, can cause catastrophic failures.
The point level trip will provide a reliable indication of the amount of sand in the desander allowing it to be removed well in advance of carry over, thus preventing any potential damage. This also reduces down time and maintenance of the downstream equipment.
