Laboratory approved for in-house UL certification

Non-metallic electrical enclosures manufacturer, Spelsberg, has over 100 million injection moulded parts being processed every year. R&D is extremely important for the company in order to maintain its position as a technological leader in its area of expertise; its Germany based manufacturing facilities include a testing laboratory which is now able to conduct UL compliance tests in-house.

UL compliance, specifically UL50 in the case of enclosures for electrical equipment, is an essential requirement for specification into many applications for most industries around the world. As an internationally recognised standard, it confirms to end users that the product has been designed and manufactured to offer relevant protection to personnel and members of the public who may come into contact with the component.

The Spelsberg laboratory is well equipped to conduct a multitude of tests which are designed to push the manufacturer’s latest components to the very limits of their performance capabilities. The facilities allow IP and IK tests against water and dust ingress and external mechanical stresses, as well as tests for flame resistance, UV resistance and other specialist requirements.

As testament to the quality of the facility it has now been certified by UL as fully compliant with the Client Test Data Programme (CTDP), which entitles it to conduct tests and issue certifications on behalf of UL.

Of course, becoming certified requires many years of collaboration with UL to prove the reliability of the testing facilities and the integrity of the organisation. For over a decade Spelsberg has been conducting tests with regular audits from UL; along the way obtaining relevant UL certificates for its many popular ranges of junction boxes, distribution boxes and electrical housings.

Chris Lloyd, Managing Director of Spelsberg UK, explained the benefits to clients: “This will allow us to launch new products onto the market quicker, as our R&D team are no longer reliant on external laboratories or auditors to secure certification. Crucially, this will also speed up our ability to respond to requests for bespoke enclosure solutions and complete turnkey systems, a service which is rapidly growing in popularity in the UK.”

Spelsberg’s company philosophy is based around the idea of providing flexibility and freedom to its customers. The space provided within each junction box; the large distribution and warehousing space; and the freedom to customise almost any product, irrespective of quantity, all equates to “Space for you”.
