Linear position sensors for professional mountain bike set-up

Linear position sensors for professional mountain bike set-up
As in all areas of elite sports, teams and competitors go to great lengths to ensure their equipment set-up is optimised for the best possible performance levels. This is certainly the case for Loic Bruni, the 2015 UCI Mountain Bike & Trials Downhill World Champion. Loic and his French team have been using Variohm EuroSensor VLP and ELPM linear potentiometers to measure suspension-fork and frame shock absorber travel for more than three years. Fine tuning the set-up is critical and can make match- winning milliseconds of difference to the ‘sag’ of the bike – how it sits with the rider in real race conditions - and at the top end of the sport, dynamic measurement is essential.

Durable rotary position sensing

Durable rotary position sensing
Novotechnik’s RSB-3600 and RMB-3600 single- and multi-turn Hall Effect rotary position sensors are available in a wide choice of configuration options for maximum application flexibility. Available from Variohm EuroSensor, the highly durable sensor range is housed in a tough 36.5 mm diameter all-metal housing with a choice of solid or hollow shafts and environmental protection from IP67 to IP69K. With an absolute 12-bit resolution and linearity of +/- 0.03%, output options include analogue current or voltage and incremental for the single-turn model, and analogue and high-speed SSI for the multi-turn. Aimed at demanding positioning tasks on industrial and agricultural machinery or mobile and marine equipment, the sensors are also available in dual-channel redundant versions.

Dynamic linear position sensing

Dynamic linear position sensing
Now available from Variohm EuroSensor, Novotechnik’s recently announced TF1 linear position sensor utilises an inductive measuring principle that is impervious to strong magnetic fields and has dynamic and environmental characteristics that suits arduous high precision and high speed positioning tasks on automated machinery. With its touchless and wear-free non-contacting design the TF1 provides a measurement range up to 1000 mm with a resolution down to 1 micron. Its 10 kHz refresh rate allows high speed position measurement and feedback, and a choice of current/voltage output as well as SSI, IO-Link and CANopen provides maximum interfacing flexibility. An Ethernet interface is also planned for release in the near future
