The increase in accuracy requirements and functionality offered by smart meters is driving demand for ultrasonic gas measurement. As a result, fully assembled ultrasonic sensors are now being offered by CeramTec, resulting in significantly shorter development times for manufacturers.

The SureSense family of user-customisable photo-electric sensors have been developed by SICK as a concept that enables machine builders and plant engineers to specify from a wide-range of sensing options all within a standard technology, set-up, mounting and housing. The durable SureSense sensors can reliably detect nearly any object in any environment – ensuring machines and lines stay up and running at full capacity. 

A student at the University of Huddersfield has had the responsibility of making sure that Stephen Hawking keeps his synthesised voice plus the ability to communicate his influential ideas. Paweł Woźniak, who is completing his Bachelor of Engineering degree at the University, earned a coveted work placement year with Intel, at its Swindon base. He had a wide range of tasks and responsibilities and they included an assignment to visit the physicist in Cambridge in order to troubleshoot the devices he uses to communicate.

For the benefit of its customers in offshore applications, Leica Geosystems has introduced its Leica MSS420 Dredging Sensor. VG Entreprenør, a construction company with expertise in all types of coastal area projects, started working on a project for the extension Esbjerg port, Denmark, with a new urban area and marina using the new sensor.

  A small, powerful and colourful climate sensor has been introduced by Molex subsidiary Sensorcon, which can provide workers in sensitive or harsh environments a clear understanding of environmental conditions.

The KX220 sensor series, a family of medium-g, tri-axis Analog Accelerometers has been launched by Kionix, a ROHM group company. Initially two versions are available: the KX220-1071 and the KX220-1072, providing +/-20g and +/-40g ranges respectively. Maximum supported bandwidths range from 4.5kHz to 8kHz.

Multi-pixel Sensirion Gas Platform (SGP) devices are in stock at Mouser Electronics. Among the only long-term stable siloxane-resistant MEMS gas sensors in the market today, the SGP devices are ideal for integration into mobile devices for reporting indoor air quality, measuring breath alcohol concentration, or recognising smells.

The sensor specialist Balluff has developed a new BTS infrared temperature sensor with IO-Link interface and two switching outputs. It can monitor temperatures between 250 and 1,250°C even in inaccessible or hazardous areas, detect hot objects in motion and record temperature values - all without contact.

The 7014 Blackwater liquid level holding tank sensor from Gill Sensors has been designed for all applications where consistently reliable and maintenance-free measurement of black and grey water is needed. It has an output voltage range of 0.25-10.0VDC and is resistive of 10-180 or 240-33Ohms.
