Latest cutting tool technology on display at IMTS 2014

Located in the Tooling & Workholding Pavilion at IMTS 2014, SGS will be showcasing the latest equipment and cutting tool technology. On the stand, the company will be machining stainless steel, composite materials, titanium and aluminium with an impressive line-up of new and featured tools. These include the Series 33 for stainless steel applications; diamond coated end mills, drills, routers for composites; T-Carb for titanium machining; and, S-Carb APR for high efficiency aluminium machining.

Visitors to the stand will have a photo opportunity with the official Bloodhound Super-Sonic-Car and the ultimate racing experience in the Bloodhound SSC Simulator. SGS is a project sponsor and the first 500 visitors to the Bloodhound will receive a special gift.

At the exhibition, Antony Theaker, from SGS UK, will deliver a presentation on ‘high efficiency machining of aluminium aircraft structural components’ during the IMTS Conference Series. He says: “One of the most significant barriers to the implementation of high efficiency machining is the design and performance limitations of the cutting tool. The speed at which it can remove material over an acceptable lifespan is effectively holding back the entire civil and defence aerospace industries, where efficiency gains are necessary to maintain and increase market share against aggressive global competition.”

Taking the development of a Patented advanced, high performance cutting tool design to the next level through comprehensive empirical research and testing, has resulted in a range of cutting tools specifically targeted at high efficiency machining. Correctly applied these tools are capable of reducing machining cycle times by over 50%, removing up to 800% more material, improving tool life by over 300 per cent and reducing energy consumption by over 25%.

IMTS is the largest manufacturing technology show in the Western Hemisphere, featuring 1900 exhibitors over six days the exhibition runs from 8th to 13th September, at McCormick Place, Chicago.
