Mini-PLC includes high-voltage power output

The range of credit-card-size mini-PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) at RS components has been significantly extended by six new models and two starter kits from Barth Elektronik.  Targeting machine and panel builders and opening up the possibilities for controlling new types of industrial applications, the mini-PLCs can be battery powered and allow engineers to control small applications such as stand-alone machines or mobile applications.

. In addition, the PLCs can be directly integrated into machines, bringing the advantage of reduced wiring.

The first in the new line-up from RS, Barth’s international distributor, is the STG-65. This is a freely programmable 1kW mini-PLC that includes a high-voltage power output to control AC-loads up to 4A maximum (continuous operation), a 0-10V input and two universal inputs, all of which makes the PLC ideal for use as a direct AC driver for temperature control applications.

The second device is the STG-95, which offers a two-line blue-backlit LCD, a mounting depth of only 15mm, and is designed for panel-mount applications that require an IP40 protection grade.

The third is the STG-100, which is the outdoor and splash-proof mini-PLC version in the Barth mini-PLC series. The device also comes with a two-line LCD and can be used for applications where an IP65 protection grade on the front panel is required.

Both of these devices are programmable via BASIC, C or assembler languages. The fourth is the panel-mount STG-115, which also comes with a two-row backlit LCD, but can be programmed via the intuitive miCon-L graphical software, which is downloadable for free from the Barth website.

Based on the STG-600 and STG-500 PLCs, RS has also added two mini-PLCs with the STG-650 and STG-550, which offer graphical programmability and communication capabilities via the CAN bus. The RS-485 port allows the integration of the mini-PLCs in existing networks and also connection to various network components such as displays, stepper motors or sensors and other monitoring devices.

The STG-550 and STG-650 do not need any peripheral components for operation and are well suited to harsh environments, opening up a variety of applications in industrial, automotive and 12/24V battery-powered applications.

The new starter kits – STA-650 and STA-550 – provide a package to enable a quick introduction to the graphical programming of the STG-650 and STG-550 via the miCon-L software, which provides programming, simulation and testing.
