In response to the global COVID-19 pandemic, many medical equipment manufacturers have been setting up ambitious, fast-paced scale-up activities to boost production and shipment of critical resources. An innovative technology for monitoring electromagnetic brakes in elevators and stage/theatre applications has been developed by Warner Electric. The sensor is backwards compatible with conventional electromechanical microswitches, but with none of their inherent limitations.

The spring actuated, electrically released brakes range from Warner Electric, (part of the Altra Industrial Motion Corporation) the XS-series, have been developed specifically to meet stringent space and weight requirements, providing reliable braking performance in a package weighing as little as 27g. Designed as statically engaged holding brakes, the XS units can also be used to stop a moving load in exceptional situations.

Handling equipment for modern materials needs to run rapidly, efficiently and reliably and it must also stop when required. The official opening of Warner Electric’s extended factory in Angers, France was celebrated in October. The new production facility consolidates Warner’s manufacturing activities to a single area, which has led to immediate improvements to lead times and the opportunity to further grow its product range.

There are some applications where every gram or cubic millimetre counts. When it comes to braking solutions, Warner Electric recognises that in many of these situations the only solutions available are expensive permanent magnet brakes. As a consequence, it has developed a range of spring-set holding brakes which are the smallest on the market and offer the same performance at a competitive cost.

  Using Warner Electric's ERS brakes, engineering students from the University of Wisconsin-Madison have built a transportation device to enable a paralysed Orthopaedic surgeon to operate.
