Eliminating tramp oil requires an advanced design. Positive coolant flow, superior float design and simple oil separation are key success factors. Unlike belt and wheel skimmers, the Lube-Sep draws coolant into the coalescing box at a minimum of 2,200 litres per day. This turnover guarantees oil removal via collection from the surface of the coolant by a Tri-Vortex, 3 ball float. A simple weir and plate arrangement captures the oil and sends it to a holding tank for disposal. Clean coolant is gravity-fed back to the machine sump.

RETIOL CO 33 is a synthetic water miscible lubrocoolant specifically developed for machining operations on metal carbide components and tools. RETIOL CO 33 is highly resistant against cobalt leaching and said to be particularly effective in high speed carbide grinding operations due to it's low foaming characteristics.

Normally the separate lubricant in the machine will leak into the forging lubricant and gradually dilute the performance until the tool life becomes so poor or the component won’t run that the whole system needs to be discarded at significant cost and also downtime. The lubricants come in a range of viscosities to suit different machines.

In metal cutting operations where cutting fluids are used, the swarf absorbs a large amount of coolant. What is desired is dry chips that are easy to handle and cutting fluids that can be reclaimed and fed back to the cutting operation, either directly or via a filtering stage. Centrifuging, filtering of the cutting fluid and removal of the dry swarf can be handled by a continuously working swarf handling system, where manual labour often can be entirely eliminated.

Recent investigations into the use of MWFs have seen a number of emerging lessons for users and suppliers of fluids and related equipment. During 2005-06 larger users have been targeted and of the companies visited by HSE inspectors 25% were issued with improvement notices based on exposure of their workers to risk of respiratory disease. Smaller users are being targeted this year.

The Midlands based precision enginering company was experiencing operators complaining of skin irritaion and sticky residues on the machines from the oil based coolant. They needed a coolant to provide not only high performance on a range of aerospace alloys and yellow metals but a coolant that kept the machine tool clean, had a long sump life and didnt cause any skin irritation to operators.
