At a High Wycombe engineering company many years ago, Ray Harris started out on a five year mould and tool making apprenticeship, at just 16 years old. After two years he left as much of this type of work was being offshored and he could see little future in it. Harris moved to a nearby subcontractor that specialised in supplying components for Formula 1 and has worked in the industry ever since, both in the supply chain and in-house for two leading F1 teams.

Small to medium-size wing components for the Airbus A330 family of long-range, wide-body jetliners are now in production through a flexible manufacturing system (FMS) which is in operation at a leading aerospace subcontractor in the south of England. The FMS incorporates five Hermle 5-axis, vertical-spindle machining centres - four C 42 Us and a larger C 52 U, the first to be installed in the UK.

After a 5-axis machining centre experienced catastrophic failure, and subcontractor, Weymouth-based FGP Systems had to continue supplying 12 aircraft seat tray table assemblies per day, which were being produced on it, they looked for a quick solution. It was to buy a new, German-built Hermle C 400 machining centre, which was supplied by UK agent Geo Kingsbury in a lead-time of two weeks.

The Hermle C 60 U MT 5-axis mill-turn centre fitted with the latest Heidenhain TNC 640 CNC system is the subject of a new video published by Geo Kingsbury which was shot at the Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Centre (NAMRC) in Rotherham, A 1.5-tonne steel billet is seen being machined to leave a component weighing nearly two-thirds less at just 565 kgs.

New 5-Axis Machining Centre Has Wealth Of Automation Options
A new, 5-axis machining centre has been added to the Hermle C-series range, which now consists of seven models. The C 32 U dynamic is capable of fully interpolative 5-axis profiling as well as 5-sided machining within a working envelope of 650 x 650 x 500 mm. The single-lift machine can be transported as a single unit and has three-point support requiring no special foundations. Availability is through sole UK and Ireland agent, Geo Kingsbury.
