Crane Electronics’ TorqueStar Opta torque data collector is now available with a new text attribute function. This “call to action” feature makes it possible to instruct the operator to perform an additional non-measurement action when using the audit tool. For example the unit can ask for a visual inspection to be carried out on a particular part being fitted, or can also ask whether all necessary documentation has been attached.

Using ProWrench Opta digital torque wrenches from Crane Electronics, Nissan has successfully introduced a new method of carrying out checks of the torque values of critical fastenings within the bodyshop of their Sunderland manufacturing plant.

There are often many sources of torque data within a production environment such as tool certification results, line side tool verifications (cp/cpk checks), roving torque audit routines, audit device calibrations or defect containment issues. Torque specialist Crane Electronics has introduced a new tool and torque management software that merges this data. Opta Management offers a fully integrated and meaningful analysis of all relevant torque related information. It was specifically developed to offer a high degree of customisation and to integrate seamlessly into a company’s existing quality system and documentation policy.

The correct tightening of nuts and bolts is critical in product manufacture or assembly. Incorrect procedures can have major safety implications and can also have significant impact on product quality and lead to recalls. Line side testing of fastener assembly tools is therefore important and Crane Electronics’ latest generation of JRS Opta (Joint Rate Simulator) computer controlled test benches provides the solution for many industries. The JRS Opta has been designed for assembly tool performance testing and this is achieved by accurate and repetitive simulation of the joint.

Crane Electronics has supplied a TMAC Opta system with an IS “WrenchMaster” to a major UK vehicle assembly plant, where a new torque application has required the accurate tightening of the exhaust manifold to its petrol engines.

MAHLE Powertrain has relied on Crane Electronics’ torque control products for over a decade. Due to the increased level of testing required by MAHLE and their customers, they have decided to upgrade their equipment with the latest generation of Crane products. Dave Burton, Production Engineer, at the Wellingborough production plant in the UK explains: “We assemble engines and, depending on the project, typically checking one in 50 engines per shift basis to ensure high-quality tightening of nuts, bolts and fasteners.” Delivering the correct level of torque is crucial in the automotive industry: too little and joints may rattle and loosen with implicit safety implications. Alternatively, over tightening can mean fixings are taken past their yield point, which is just as dangerous, leading to early failure of the bolted joint.

A new Customer Service Department has been created at Crane Electronics headed by new Customer Service Manager, John Bromwich. Under his leadership, the department is responsible for all UK customer support functions provided for end users and distributors of the company’s torque control products and services. These include the integration of training, commissioning, installations, technical product support, servicing and repair/ calibration activities.

In critical vehicle assembly work, it is absolutely essential that not only are the correct torque tools selected for each fastening operation, but also that all joints are tightened to the exact torque. To carry out this work more quickly, more easily and more reliably, Crane Electronics has introduced the new Wireless Tool Control System.
