Built in the 19th century, Tower Bridge is one of London’s most recognisable landmarks. Under the Corporation of London (Tower Bridge) Act 1885, the bridge is required to be raised to provide access to and egress from the Upper Pool of London, day and night, 365 days a year. The bridge is raised around 800 times per annum.

  A new tool has been launched by Dana Brevini to help customers easily select the appropriate geared motor or geared unit via a configurator accessible from the website.

To double the size of the Panama Canal, a recently opened expansion has allowed triple the maximum vessel size for the major shipping route. Critical to this huge engineering project are the new locks, the most important component of the expansion, and Brevini gearboxes, which are driving the massive sluice gates, manufactured by Cimolai Technology.

Brevini UK were delighted to be chosen by AMCO Engineering to provide technical expertise and to supply the complete drive packages for a major Transport for London (TfL) project, part of the refurbishment and upgrade of the linkspans (loading bridges) at the Woolwich Ferry in London.

The variety of winch and hoist designs is vast and the number of applications almost too numerous to count. However there are some common features and design attributes that can be applied to almost every winch design. Delivering robust and reliable machinery to the mining industry is a specialist task that requires components designed for the job, as well as experience in producing equipment for harsh environments. For one trommel manufacturer in the UK, this meant teaming up with Brevini in order to create a pair of 20 metre machines destined for an iron ore processing facility in Trinidad.

Brevini UK will be exhibiting at this year’s Offshore Europe exhibition to promote its range of total drive train solutions for the marine and offshore industries. The two Brevini brands, Power Transmission and Fluid Power, will be at the show to demonstrate how their products integrate seamlessly to provide a fully engineered solution; designed and manufactured from a single source. The range includes hydraulic motors, valves, pumps, gear boxes and winches, all of which are certified for use in offshore applications.

Manufacturing key pieces of equipment for use in the marine environment places a number of demands on the various components, not least those of reliability and durability. For one such manufacturer, the need for winch drives, hydraulic motors and control valves has led to a long working relationship with Brevini, a leading supplier to the OEM sector.

Fully integrated drive systems – mechanical and hydraulic – offer many benefits in terms of easier procurement, improved performance and ease of maintenance. Increasingly, plant engineers and OEMs are adopting a systems approach rather than buying individual transmission components and building their own drives, says Dave Brown of Brevini UK.

Specifying single components within a hydraulic system from different suppliers can be a time consuming and involving task. Not only does each component need to be checked for application suitability, it also needs to be checked for compatibility with the rest of the system. Brevini has now brought all of the groups own hydraulic power brands under the umbrella of Brevini Fluid Power, to help customers source an entire system solution from a single supplier; reducing purchasing and integration costs, whilst improving reliability and efficiency.

Maintenance and repair work is a real threat to the productivity of most industrial applications due to the unavoidable downtime that is incurred. Even the most reliable of components require regular inspection for signs of wear and intermittent repair work to keep them operating efficiently. The Brevini on-site maintenance and repair service has been developed to allow Brevini engineers to carry out a greater number of jobs in-situ; reducing the likelihood of parts needing to be removed from site and significantly reducing costly downtime.

By the end of 2014 the World's largest platform installation / decommissioning and pipelay vessel be ready for offshore operations; and on board will be 32 high power gearboxes from Brevini Power Transmission. Capable of producing 2,000 tonnes of tension, the abandon and recovery winches will be used as part of the pipe laying equipment on board the Pieter Schelte, which is currently being built by the Korean shipyard Daewoo.  

Brevini Power Transmission has supplied a new motor and gearbox package to a theme park in Essex. The project required a compact drive arrangement to provide power to the rotating ride which could be delivered to a short lead time to suit the tight build schedule. The Fireball ride, located at The Adventure Island Park in Southend on Sea, Essex, has provided thrills to thousands of children and adults alike.

Recent harsh and extended winters have seen the demand for rock salt increase, which has resulted in increased production from the country’s mines. Efficient and reliable equipment is essential if the roads are to be kept clear of snow and ice each winter. One mine in Cheshire reviewed the condition of the existing main hoist and concluded it should be replaced with a more efficient drive system from Brevini Power Transmissions.

Brevini Fluid Power has announced the release of a new SH11C series of fixed displacement axial piston pumps and motors. Suitable for a wide range of industrial applications the new series offers improved flexibility, high performance and reliability. At the same time BFP has also released the new SH7V series of axial piston hydraulic motors for use in heavy duty transmissions.

When Whitham Mills Engineering was looking for a drive solution for its latest mobile paper shredder it turned to Brevini Power Transmission for assistance. The company required a compact solution which would keep the weight of the product down thus increasing the shredding vehicle’s payload. Fortunately Brevini was able to supply a complete solution using its high efficiency planetary gearboxes combined with hydraulic motors from its sister company, Brevini Fluid Power.

Most large commercial blast furnaces receive tons of raw materials on a continuous basis; this requires a conveying system which is capable of carrying large skips at high speeds to the top of the furnace. The open gear systems which are traditionally used to drive the skip winches are characterised by loud operation and heavy vibration, which inevitably leads to wear and ultimately reliability issues.
