Aerospace primes given a perspective on quality from key EMS provider.

AWS Electronics Group – a leading independent Electronic Manufacturing Solutions (EMS) provider – has received SC21 Silver Award Status for the second consecutive year for its ongoing quality and delivery performance. AWS were showing at this years Farnborough Air show for the first time and their success with SC21 was also echoed on other stands by the Midlands Aerospace Alliance (MAA) which supports and represents the aerospace industry across the Midlands and which works closely with ADS, the trade body advancing UK aerospace, defence and security industries.

AWS Group, is using the newly-available V 2.04 Speedplacer software from Speedplacer Ltd at its AWS Cemgraft location to simplify the process of populating PCBs by hand, thereby reducing time, eliminating errors and cutting the cost of producing prototype and low volume boards.

During a recent address to the A|D|S Quality Conference at RAF Cosford, Mike Berridge, Director of Business Improvement for AWS Group - one of the UK’s leading independent Electronic Manufacturing Solutions (EMS) providers - gave his views on the SC21 program, highlighting significant challenges for the defence and aerospace sector. AWS is one of only 16 companies out of 7000 suppliers to the aerospace industry to have been accredited with recognition awards to SC21, and this low figure, said Berridge, was an issue in itself, although he believes momentum is now building.

AWS Group has secured a £5.5M equity investment from the private equity arm of Barclays Bank plc, Barclays Ventures. The finance will be used to fund growth, both organically and by further focused acquisitions in the UK. AWS will also widen its footprint internationally with a targeted presence in South East Asia.

AWS Group has announced that it will shortly double the capacity of its Slovakian plant in Namestrovo. AWS bought Electro-connect Slovakia a little over a year ago for an undisclosed sum, and has since invested over £200,000, ensuring that its East European facility is a ‘mirror’ of AWS Electronics in terms of equipment, quality standards and procedures.

AWS Group has been presented with the SBAC’s Silver Award for exceeding targets set by the Society in its SC21 (21st Century Supply Chain) change programme. AWS Group is the first company to be awarded, and has already been acknowledged by the Society of British Aerospace Companies as leading the field of about 350 suppliers signed up to the UK Aerospace market initiative.

AWS Grouphas an nounced additions to its senior management team, designed to support growth and improve the service the company delivers to its customer base. In the last few months, Mike Fairclough has joined as Group Sales Manager and Adrian Keane has been appointed Group Financial Director. Mike Berridge has also been given a board level position with responsibility to oversee Continuous Improvement and Strategic Development.

AWS Cemgraft, a company within the AWS Group, one of the UK’s leading specialist Electronic Manufacturing Services (EMS) providers, has announced its Fast Track prototyping service can turn around prototype or urgent low volume requests in five to ten days as standard, and when really urgent, the company has managed to deliver in 24 hours.
