AWS Group has announced that it will shortly double the capacity of its Slovakian plant in Namestrovo. AWS bought Electro-connect Slovakia a little over a year ago for an undisclosed sum, and has since invested over £200,000, ensuring that its East European facility is a ‘mirror’ of AWS Electronics in terms of equipment, quality standards and procedures.
All the Slovakian workforce have been trained at AWS Group’s UK factories, and, following the acquisition of a further 16 000 square feet of manufacturing space a second full surface mount production line is being installed as well as additional production assembly cells.
Comments AWS Group’s CEO Paul Deehan: “Our Slovakian operation allows us to offer a full UK-based engineering service to our customers while at the same time delivering the benefits of manufacturing in a much lower cost environment than the UK. For example, new products may be fully engineered through prototype services in the UK before proven designs are transferred to Slovakia.”
He continues: “However, the business model is flexible. We have picked up business in Namestrovo that had been transferred to India and S.E Asia for cost reasons, but failed because of quality or delivery issues. Sometimes, labour intensive processes are performed in Slovakia with final assembly and test completed in the UK. And not all products are suitable for transfer to this low cost region. Our policy is to sit down with our customers and discuss the best option for their product.”
